Old an Ship Mixes With Underworld

Gambling Vessel In U. S. Custody

By ROGER STUART Scipps-Howard Staff Writer WASHINGTON, Dec, 11. — The

paths of glory were supposed to lead to the scrapheap for one old naval vessel, By a eHeallous route, how-

ever, she became a lowly gambling * ship. : Her final disposition is anybody's guess. Meanwhile, the Aroostok once more is back in Uncle Sam's custody. Just how she got mixed up with the underworld Mr. Stuart isn't clear. Neither the reconstruc-

tion finance corporation, the army, the navy, nor the maritime commission—all of whom had a hand in guiding her destiny—cares to assume the blame. Launched as the Bunker Hill, back in 1907, she went into the navy as the U. 8. 8, Aroostok, in 1917.

In world war II, the navy thought she couldn't take it. She was classified as an AK 24 (cargo ship), but only after the war shipping administration declined to take her off the navy's hands. In January, 1943, the Aroostok was stricken from the navy lists and deliveredyto the maritime commission for sale as a hulk. The following month, however, she was turned over to the war department for service as an army barge in the Seattle area, But she soon was transfered to the metals reserve corporation., an RFC subsidiary. Thereupon she was offered for sale as scrap. Dulein Steel Products, Ine. of Seattle, won her by agreeing to demolish the hull and pay metals reserve $3 a gross ton for the 2300 tons of metallic scrap expected to be salvaged. In May, 1046, Dulein paid MRC $6900 in full settlement. “It was still our understanding,” the RFC spokesman said, “that she would be scrapped in accordance with the contract.” But she wasn't. In some manner Tony Cornero Stralla got hold of her. She was licensed for Pacific coastal trading. Federal Judge J. F. T. O'Connor ruled in Los Angeles the other day that she was being used as a gambling ship. He ordered Mr. Stralla to forfeit her to the government. A U. 8. marshal has her in custody pending a court decision. The justice department wants the court to turn her over to the coast guard,
