CHICAGO, Dec. 11 (U, P.).—Some | basketball fireworks should fly to-|
night and toniorrow night as Illinois and Jowa, with nearly the same teams that already have won Big Nine championships, Speed up their Warmup campaigns. +o Illinois, with four of its brilliant iz Kids back from the 1943 i pionship - team, bumps into Marquette at Champaign tonight, and Jowa, fired by four members of ita title team of 1945, runs into Detroit Thursday night at Iowa City. «« Marquette, who won three games ore losing to Wisconsin Saturday, rated as one of the Midwest's trongest teams, and Detroit's ruged and rangy squad will give the awkeyes their toughest test so far, ut both Big Nine teams were expected to win. Illinois Shows Power Illinois showed its strength by whizzing past Cornell (Iowa) in its bpener, 87 to 39, with reserves taking pver at halftime. Iowa knocked off th Dakota State and Kansas Bate, averaging 63.5 points a game. The Illini, on the basis of the Whiz Kids' return and some shiny few prospects, have been rated
so far as the team to onoe the conference race tarts the first of the year.
{| ‘But the red hot Hawkeyes are so lose ‘to them on paper that the {fllini undoubtedly are uncomforttable. Illinois’ returning Whiz Kids are dy Phillip, all-time high scorer i the conference with 258 points {in 1943, Ken Menke, Jack Smiley ‘and Gene Vance. All of them exipept Menke were rated all-confer-‘ence players in 1943, Menke landed on the second team. {But the Hawkeyes are just about us impressive. Bulwarking the Iowa team are Herb Wilkinson, three-time allAmerican, guard selection; Clayton Wilkinsoft, Dick Ives and Jack Spencer—all back from the title team of 1045. Herb Wilkinson was an all-conference guard that year and Ives was the hottest scorer in the loop with 208 points. Giving the Hawkeyes still more ve Danner, all-con-ference MOFwar in fergie Murray Wier, who poured in points when his team needed them most last year, and Noble Jorgensen, 6foot, 9-inch center. Both teams have three weeks to polish up for the Big Nine race Rhead. Illinois opens against WisConsin Jan. 1 and Iowa meet§ the Badgers at Jowa City Jan. 4.

By J. E. O'BRIEN Only the turkeys who paid the supreme sacrifice to become the main course oouldn't join im the cheerful proceedings last night at the annual football banquet of the Indiana University club of Indianapolis, Naturally it wasn't such a gala occasion as that of last year celebrating Indiana's first Big Nine championship. But the several hundred alumni and guests who ate and applauded at the Indianapolis Athletic club agreed with Coach Bo McMillen that the Hapsiers made an “honorable defense” of that title. - * - Spirits were bolstered further by Bo's reminder. that only eight of

captain of the 1946 team and captain-elect for 1947, and Frank Ciolli, Joe Sowinski and Russell Deal, all seniors on the team. In’ their addresses the seniors promised the high school guests that they would play under the best coaching staff in the country should they decide to attend Indiana, If the high school boys had any discouragement, it was from the fact that a large segment of the
team couldn't attend the banquet
because of approaching examinations. That and the fact that the Hoosier players present departed early to get back to the books.
