| Disease of Nervous System Has Baffling Features

By WILLIAM A, O'BRIEN, M. D. MULTIPLE (DISSEMINATED) sclerosis, a chronic disease of the nervous system, can produce symptoms in every part of the body. This disease has many baffling features. The announcement that a special’ organization has been launched to study multiple sclerosis will come as welcome news to its many victims, Multiple sclerosis is a disease of ups and downs. New syfaptoms ap- | pear or old ones become more se-

[vere immediately following periods {in which the patient, although partially incapacitated, is able to get along fairly well. Remissions up to more than 20 years in length have been reported in some cases of the disease.

” ” o : THE CURRENT number of cases of multiple sclerosis is not known, although the disease apparently is more common than it is generally

numbness, tremors, speech problems, biadder difficulties and many other troubles. The striking characteristio of patients with this disease is their re'markable cheerfulness, which enables them to carry on in the face of adversity, » yo» ATTEMPTS TO treat the disease are based upon the possibility that it may be caused by some form of deficiency disease, by blood which dlots too easily, or by spasm of the vessels in the brain or cord. Infection, emotional strains, and pregnancy may aggravate it, and a cold climate may aid its development. In multiple sclerosis, the spinal cord undergoes patchy degeneration in which not all of the nerve fibers are destroyed. The patient's ability to recover partially from time to time Is due to regrowth of the remaining rerve
