“NOW AND THEN “it is good to put some dramatic appeal in our foods. The dessert souffle recipe offered today is one that enables a eook to add that kind of touch.
A fine feature about it is that very little sugar is required. The color of this delicious dessert is one of a rare amber and it is almost as light as a cloud.

|The Old Drugs Give Way To New Ones
By JANE STAFFORD Science Service Staff Writer ! AS NEW. MEDICINES like the sulfa drugs, penicillin and streptomycin are discovered and found
useful, many old remedies familiar to our parents and grandparents are discarded. Nux voniica, ergot, spirit of ethyl nitrite, Blaud’s pills and sirup of ferrous iodide are some of the old stand-bys that have recently been discarded in favor of newer ideas in medical treatment. Next to go may be digitalis, the drug made from dried leaves of the fox-glove plant and used to treat certain kinds of heart disease. Only a few years ago, the very:idea of giving up this drug would have seemed preposterous, E. Fullerton Cook, chairman of the U, 8. Phar-
ments. But the death knell for digitalis may have been sounded, he suggests, when the U. 8. P. scope subcommittee recognized digitoxin, digoxin and lanatocide C, crystalline glycosides of digitalis, for the coming U. 8, P. XIII Ww. 8 8 . THE U. 8. Pharmacopoela, or U. 8. P. for ‘short, is recognized in state and federal laws as providing | standards for drugs and medicines. | You may have noticed the letters
with {or tincture of iodine or some other!
| medicine you have bought.
| The law provides that if a manufacturer uses a title for his product such as tincture of iodine, which is in the Pharmacopoeia, the product must comply with the standards of the Pharmacopoeia for- that substance, unless the manufacturer declares his own standards and their difference from the U. 8. P. Generally, minimum standards only are given, but in the case of medicines that might be harmful if too strong, maximum standards are also given. Not every remedy or medicine sold in drug stores is in the Pharmacopoeia. One of the jobs of the committee of revision is to decide which ones should be admitted and ‘which discarded. The Pharmacopoeia is {revised and a new book issued every 110 years: Supplements are issued as neces- | sary during the years between revisions.

Teen-Agers Praised By D. A. R.
Times Special } “WASHINGTON, Dec. 9. — Boys clubs and teen-age community cens ters were praised yesterday as im-
portant agencies to combat juvenile crime, in" a report to all chapters by Mrs, Julius Y. Talmadge, president general of the D, A. R. At the same time, Mrs. Talmadge urged the chapters to investigate conditions in jails and industrial schools and reformatories housing juvenile delinquents, She called attention to a resolution passed by the 54th D. A. R. continental
gress. It showed that more than 20,000 children are now held in American Jails, and read as follows: “Resolved
chapters investigate conditions in Jails in and near their respective communities and use their influence to «have unwholesome conditions rectified when necessary.” Mrs, Talmadge said the D. A. R. Junior American Citizen clubs, composed of boys and girls of every race, creed and color, now number more than 200,000 members,
Canapes, Now Frozen, Save Work
Hors d'oeuvres, translated from the French, means “outside the works” and common usage has made hors d'oeuvres synonymous with the little things we eat before the main meal or “the works” Most“ housewives shun the work involved in preparing these choice’ bits but no longer will they have to worry. In the expanding field of frozen foods there are now frozen hors d'oeuvres, They are called Dover D'oeuvres and the only work involved is to remove them from the refrigerator half an hour before serving.

Gift Problem
“Of-the-month” clubs are becoming more and more popular and the newest idea is a “Candy-of-the-Month club.” Subscribers are offered a different box of candy for each month except June, July and August, mailed directly to them from several of America's leading confectioners. New York's chocolates, the rich pralines of New Orleans and Allie Adams’ chocolate and vanilla novelty caramels from Texas are part of the candy monthly parade. Almond roca, made for 20 years in Tacoma, a box of coconut balls hand-dipped in chewy butterscotch, and chocolates from the Country store in Beverly Hills also are included in the nine-month subscription. A wonderful way to solve.a Christmas gift problem, subscribing to the club also will bring good cheer throughout the year to the recipient. Elsa Maxwell was the “taster” and made the selections for the wide variety of candies. It's a new twist in gifts, a new “of-the-month club” that sounds “delicious.”
