Turners’ Play ¢ Draws Crowd

Amateur Group Puts On Good Performance

opened its current season with an ambitious production of “You Can't Take It With You” at the Athenaeum Saturday night. To a large and enthusiastic audience, the amateur group presented a ereditable achievement, both in staging and in acting. The George Kaufman-Moss Hart comedy is a difficult enterprise. I'm not sure that it's a wise choice for an amateur group. But amateur theater people are under pressure nowadays, with a public made hyper-sophisticated by movies and radio. The problem is to ind a play that will draw a crowd—a fact which, I think, tends to stifle experiment. Week's Run Would Be Good Eileen Barber as Penelope Sycamore sustained much of the action in Saturday night's performance. With more experience, with a weeklong run, other members of the cast would probably have acquired more confidence and authority. As 1 wrote last season about the Turners theater, it seems a shame to go to so much trouble for & single performance. Actors learn from-repeated appearances. And the object of amateur dramatics is training in theater.
