Teen Talk—
~ Teen-Age Pianist Ready for Symphony Concert
By BOBBIE SCHAEFFER THE IVORY and ebony keyboard was fascinating to the boy of 4—so fascinating that his parents decided he should learn all about it. Today he is 13 and knows that keyboard from the bottom note to the very top one. His fingers are part of the instrument now and move dexterously over the difficult phrases of Stravinsky, . Tschaikowsky and many other works. And now Easley R. Blackwood Jr. is the winner of the Indianapolis symphony orchestra's instrumentalist contest and will appear with Fabien Sevitzky and the orchestra next Saturday. r » ” “I WAS SURPRISED,” he said modestly, “and didn’t know I had won until I saw it in the paper.” The first audition of teen-agers was held Nov. 23 and a board of five judges heard the cellists, violinists, pianists, ete., in the preliminary hearings. The next Saturday brought the lucky finalists before Dr, Sevitzky and Easley was chosen winner. “I've been working hard,” he confessed, and lately he has taken three or four lessons a week— priming for the contest.
He had “fiddled around” with Tschaikowsky’s Piano Concerto in B flat minor for some time, he says, but really strove for perfection the past few weeks to play it for the audition. Next Saturday morning at 10 o'clock he will appear with the orchestra ‘in the season's first
children’s concert in Cadle tabernacle and will present the first movement of the concerto. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Blackwood, 3901 N. Pennsylvania st. Easley is an 8A pupil at school 66. He plans to attend Shortridge high school but hasn't desided on a college yet. However, he does know he's career-bound to music. He may teach, he may be a concert pianist —but there's plenty of time to decide. . - » . SUMMERS usually mean vacation for Easley from piano lessons a8 well as school. He has studied under several teachers, starting at the Arthur Jordan Conservatory of music, later with Bomar Cramer and now with Edwin Biltcliffe. This week will mean a few more hours at the plano and a rehearsal with the orchestra—Easley never has played with an .orchestra before. And at the concert he will experience that for the first time. His rendition ‘of the concerto. will integrate with the strings, the horns and the woodwinds to interpret Tschaikowsky ...
» ” ” THE TEEN Canteen chorus will make its first appearance with the symphony at the concert and, under the direction of William Moon, will sing “Spirit of Christmas” (Reibold). The symphony aiso will play “Ferdinand the Bull” and the Peer Gynt suite on the program. Children and teen-agers from all over the city. and county will attend.
