Coal “Strike Prevents ‘Shift of Two Games

wl

Hardwood ‘Notes From All Over Hoosierdom

By BOB STRANAHAN o ECH'S SPACIOUS East side goalry will be dark—and cold—tomorrow night instead eof jammed with partisan followers of Howe and

Broad Ripple.

Howe wanted to move the contest to Tech's larger gym to accommodate more customers, but the plan was turned down. Tech burns approximately 45 tons of coal a day in heating the

various buildings and gym. And here was a chance to conserve. Howe and Broad Ripple can blame John L.—not Tech. Washington, too, wanted to move its game with Howe to Tech but couldn't’ for the same reason. So there'll be no door ticket sales at the Continental gym tqnight. Stu. dents and townspeople without advance ducats may as well stay at home, : The same ticket situation will apply at Broad Ripple tonight for the Cathedral clash.

® uw... STOPPER NEEDED... Crispus Attucks will need a corking guard to bottle up Vallonia’s Dick Robison tonight. The big Richard scored 57 points in two games last week, 27 against Medora and 30 against New Washington, ” » . CHANGES MADE . . . Evansville Bosse's game with Princeton, originally scheduled for last night, has been changed to Deg, 19. No reason given. But New Salem Principal Ary Skillman was notified that Fairview couldn't fill its date with New

Salem. The reason: Lack of boys|

in the Fairview school.

= ” ” DON'T SELL SHORT . .. Best looking prospects of any of the state’s high school netters seem to be at Terre Haute Garfield, which doesn’t open’ until next ‘Wednesday against Clinton. Three big reasons are Clyde Lovelette, six-foot nine and three-quarters-inch center; Ronnie Bland, six-foot-two-inch forward, and Bennie Kiburis, also a couple of inches over the two-yard mark.

= id SO THEY SAY . . . “Five of 17 players used by Indiana in its opening game with Wabash were stars in Muncie semi-final area, which may or may not prove where the best Hoosier interscholastic basketball is born. “Among the Hoosler varsity men |

were Johnny Wallace of Richmond, | met just about every t ype of wresMarshall Koontz of New Castle, |tler

Ralph Hamilton of Ft. Wayne Indiana university mat mentor fig-

South, and Murray Mendenhall Jr., and Tom Armstrong, both of Ft. Wayne Central. Muncie basketball fans know ‘em all, especially Koontz! ! I"—Bob Barnet in The Muncie Star,

» » » GREENER PASTURES . . , It will be a Hoosler homecoming for Cliff Wells and several of his players when Tulane comes through Indiana for games with Valparaiso at Gary and North Carolina state at the Coliseum later this month, Virgil (Sug) Risner, the ex-War-saw star; Jim Riffey, the former Washington Hatchet center; Don Cripe of Flora and Wells’ son, Bob, are the Indiana boys on the Green Wave squad. Tulane snowed under Keesler field and the Henderson Point Marines, but came acropper against the pow-er-laden Kentucky team. » » » TRAVEL NOTE. . . . Lafayette had arranged for a special train to carry beosters to Shelbyville Saturday night, but this had to be canceled on account of the coal strike. Undaunted, Lafayette rounded up enough busses to replace the rattler. Lafayette, incidentally,- is lining up one of the state's most attractive holiday tourneys for Jan. 1. Evansville Central, Richmond and Jasper will join the Brones.

Thom Will Test Friendly’ Terry

The “big test” for “Friendly” Jack Terry is scheduled for the Armory

wrestling ring next Tuesday night, where the Oklahoma City ace will clash with Billy Thom, Indianapolis. Such mat performers as Rene La Belle, Lefty Pacer and Gil La Gross have fallen before Terry, who gives the impression that he can dispose of his opponents with ease. “Friendly” Jack brought a new style of grappling to Indianapolis. |He sports a big/smile as a “front” | for his tricky and rough tactics. It is |a promised thriller as Thom has

his career and the former

ures he can halt Terry’s winning ‘streak. Steve Nenoff, Toledo, will oppose Buddy Knox, Tulsa, in the semiwindup. It is Knox's first appear‘lance of the indoor season.

‘Line Drive’ by

on hockey ice, : In the third and final period at contest played before 6188 fans and far out at mid-ice and the drive had so much on it that the blazing puck handcuffed Cap Goalie Red Almas, tore through his glove and dropped into the cage for the tying score at 3-3. ‘ Bush's goal was registered at 18:13, just 1 minute 48 seconds before curtains. It upset the Caps and the fans no end but was a tribute to the staying qualities of the St. Louis club, Flyers Keep Plugging As a matter of fact, the Flyers played their hockey like the Bt. Louis Cardinals play baseball, at least it was that way last night despite the fact the visitors are last in the American league's western division. At one time in the game, the Hoosiers held a 3-0 lead, shortly after the start of the second period. But the Flyers refused to fold, fought back, kept plugging and came from behind by scoring one goal in the second stanza and two in the third. The Flyers lost the services of one player, Jack Shewchuk, a defenseman, in the second period. He received a fractured left wrist and will be out of play indefinitely. He

was to return to St. Louis today while his mates went off to Pitts burgh. After Tommy Ivan's Caps fired two goals home in the first sessiun, the rooters decided the game was sewed up. And the fans’ enthusiasm soared to greater heights when the home pastimers chalked up a third goal at 1:30 of the sec. ond period. Visitors Get Going By that time, the Flyers were frantic and théy decided to do something about it. They broke their own scoring ice at 3:29 of the second stanza while their defense halted the Caps’ rushes. At the beginning of the last period, the score was 3-1 in the Caps’ favor, Finally, at 10:40 of the period, Eddie Olson put his team back in the game by eluding goalie Almas on smooth, quick passes by Hector Pozzo and Harvey Fraser, It was a well executed scoring play. The story of the tying goal has already been relaied, The Caps next home game is with New Haven Sunday night, but they play at Philadelphia Saturday, and that looks like a sure victory.
