Ex-Nazi Designer Now Plans U. S. Planes
WRIGHT FIELD, Dayton, O, Dec. 4 (U. P).~—A former, top Naz J aircraft designer—now doing research f@ the U. 8. army air forces I estimated@today that: In about three years commercial supersonic planes will be able to fly from New York to California in one hour. This estimate exceeds the most " optimistic forecasts of American au- . thorities on the imminence of supersonic commercial flights. The national advisory committee for aeronautics has sald that a 1000-mile-an-hour plane could be ly developed within three years. Although it might be used to shuttle mail across the country in | 2'% hours, its passenger counterpart could not come until later, the com-

mittee said. , The German expert is Dr. Alexander W. Lippisch, former chief designer «of the Messerschmidt Aircraft Co. He is one of 270 leading German wartime scientists and teachnicians working in this country, Some bk have been here since September, 1945, Volunteered for Work
The scientists all volunteered to I work for the U. S. government. They are contributing their know- ¢ ledge to miltary and peacetime scientific research projects, i They also are helping to put to use 500,000 captured enemy scientific documents and 5000 tons of i German technical equipment such as aircraft, engines, wind tunnels and machinery. Dr. Lippisch said aircraft might pierce the supersonic “wall” by “climbing to 40,000 feet, where shock : waves would be less intense because of lower air density. He said he believed the supersonic plane weuld evolve into a flying wing. An “economical” speed for supersonic flight, he said, would be . about 2000 miles an hour. He said a single supersonic plane could make three times as many flights as the best transcontinental plane of today. It also, he said, would be cheaper to build and simpler to maintain, : A twoiday open. house interview here with some of the former enemy scientists brought these disclosures: Near the end of the war, the Nazis experimented with a V-2 rocket with wings—hoping to make it adaptable to human control. It achieved a speed of about ‘3000 miles an hour and nearly doubled the V-2’s range. New Parachute «~ Dr. Helmut Heinrich of the Graf Zeppelin research institute at Stuttgart is carrying on in this country experiments with a ribbon parachute he developed. It is safer than the conventional type and highly useful as an aircraft landing brake and for cargo delivery, The first wind tunnel capable of testing aircraft designs at supersonic speeds has béen designed and is built here by one of the former Nazi scientists. ars. Baron Fritz Doblhoff, inventor of a jet-propelled helicopter, is continuing experiments here with his revolutionary craft. A German physicist claimed in 1944 to have invented an atomic engine. able to run 2000 years. The army estimates that research by the German scientists will save this country hundreds of millions of dollars and advance its scientific progress. by two to 10 years. Program Successful The program has been so successful that the army now plans to increase the number of former enemy scientists to 1000 as soon as arrangements can bé made to transport them from Germany and Austria. Many of the former enemy experts are awaiting an opportunity to flle for citizenship papers. The army said many of them can be released soon for work in private industry, research laboratories and education institutions. About 120 of the Germans are ) working on rocket research and development in southwesteran United States. / Another 86 are at Wright field. The army, said the Germans’ knowledge and experience has saved the U. S. taxpayer “a minimum of $750,000,000 in basic rocket research alone.”
Wyatt Reported Ready to Quit Job
WASHINGTON, Dec. 4 (U. P)) — Wilson W, Wyatt is quitting his job as federal housing expediter because of his failure to get a ) strong indorsement from President Truman, well-informed sources said today. These sources said Mr. Wyatt's decision to resign would be announced by the White House today or tomorrow. Mr. Wyatt himself had not confirmed the resignation. Yesterday he asked Mr. Truman again to re-affirm his emergency powers under the veterans housing act. He also sought affirmation of his authority to “order” government loans for builders of assembly-line factory-built houses. Mr. Truman apparently was not willing to go all the way with Mr. Wyatt. :
