' Testimony in Bilbo Hearing
Senator Denied Right To Cross-Examine
0
JACKSON, Miss, Dec. 2 (U, PJ). -T. B. Wilson, aged Negro leader, testified today that campaign speeches by Senator Theodore G.| Bilbo (D. Miss.) were instrumental | ifn denying to Negroes the right to vote in the July 2 state Democratic primary. Mr. Wilson, president of the Mississippi Progressive Voters leagie, was the first witness before a five man senate campaign investigating committee hearing charges that Mr. Bilbo’s renomination was illegal be-| cause Negroes were not permitted to vote. Bilbo in Front Row
Senator Bilbo, who won renomination in the primary, had a frontrow seat in the federal district courtroom as the hearings began. He was flanked by three attorneys but the committee had denied his request for permission to crossexamine witnesses. The committee decided, instead, that he and his | counsel could submit questions | through committee members, The committee also deferred a decision on whether it would us ef subpoena powers in view of fact that there were RY ore 200 volunteer witnesses, mostly | Negroes, on hand for the cpening session. Mr. Wilson testified that he personally heard Mr, Bilbo in campaign speeches urge white Mississipians to .“do everything you can to keep the Negroes from voting.” Senator Elmer Thomas (D. Okla.) | asked Mr. Wilson what Mississippi Negroes were “afraid” of.
