Drive and Ambition Credited In Success of Mae West
By HENRY BUTLER More about the legendary and the real Mae West. In yesterday's review of “Come On Up,” which plays its last performances at English’s this afternoon and tonight, I spoke of Miss
West's having become an important
Last night, talking with Miss West and her manager at the Indianapolis Press club, I got a better understanding of the drive and ambition
that have carried.her past conservative opposition and hostile criticism, This pint-sized gal from Brooklyn, with the grey-green eyes, and platnum hair, the tiny forearms and “eloquent hands, has upset a lot of stage and screen gustoms. When she talked last night about her first stage success, the play with the name newspapers wouldn't even print in ads at the beginning (it was called “Sex”), I began to remember dimly what critics used to comment, She couldn't write. She couldn't act. That's the kind of thing they said. A Big Job Getting that play produced was a big job. Director after director told ac It was impossible, until she the lly found a man who thought oe play unique. g she described him last night, 1°. gt to thinking of a character Mistha Auer might portray. On one occasion He told her with great dramatic seriousness, “You reek of sex.” (That line would need a Russian accent to make it really effective.) She talked of her first picture “She Done Him Wrong,” the screen version of “Diamond Lil.” Produced with a $200,000 budget in 18 days, that film broke box-office records. Into Lions’ Cage It was followed by “I'm No Angel,” the circus story, in which |

she actually did go into the lions’ cage. “I'd always wanted to do that since I was a ‘kid and my father took me to Coney Island,” Miss West remarked in good Brooklynese (she says “pernt” in a way to make any transients here from Flatbush feel homesick). She spoke of the difficulty of finding ‘new scripts. Being Mae West is no cinch, for after all she can't suddenly become “A Girl of the Lim-
Farm.” And there isn't room on any stage for more than one Mae West at a time. Box-Office Records One of her biggest ambitions has always been to break box-office records, not just for the money, but for the sheer fun of it. That drive, together with the determination to do her own kind of acting and have her shows be just what she wanted them to be, has overcome all kinds of obstacles. Many critics refuse to take her seriously. But by some miracle, she
acceptable. She has, intentionally or unintentionally, become a great comic character. I might add that the amiable, sensible Mae West of conversation is in sharp contrast with the Corliss {Dale of “Come On Up.” Somehow that makes Corliss Dale seem even funnier.

Lower Incomes and «Dimout Are Blamed
NEW YORK, Nov. 30—(U. P).— Manhattan's fabulous night club
After-dark experts said today that an uncertain stock market, the recently ordered dimout, and generally lower incomes have . combined to give the glamour cabarets a punch which almost knocked Wem beneath their tables. The Broadway restaurants, in oo neon-belt around Times Square, such as the Zanzibar, the Diamond Horseshoe, and the Latin Quarter, have felt an estimated drop of around 40 per cent in nightly attendance. On the more exclusive—and expensive—East side, at such places as the Stork Club, El Morocco, Monte Carlo, and the Copacabana, the slump is reported more moderate, closer to 25 or 30 per cent. Started a Year Ago “But you can’t blame it" on the dimout entirely,” one night club owner said. “The started about a year ago, and it really got going six or eight weeks ago when the stock market took an unexpected dive.
“And this slump isn't confined to the night clubs alone. It also includes the entire luxury trade. Ask the fur merchants, They're feeling it, too.” Strangely enough, he estimated that the dimout—now almost a week old—had knocked off only about 5 per cent of the Broadway restaurants’ trade, while clipping! approximately 15 per cent from the East-siders.
