Pre-War Kerchiefs Hidden From Nazis
Paris - imported handkerchiefs — hidden from the Nazi invaders in a score of French farm houses, behind shops and in cellars throughout the war—are appearing on the - Christmas gift market. The first large-scale shipment since the war is on counters in some 130 stores throughout the country—— in Indianapolis at Wasson's and Ayres’. Pre-war stock, the story behind this first peace-time shipment is the thrilling triumph of French craftsmen over the Nazi invader. Some 925 cases of kerchiefs, hurriedly packed in the threatened Paris of 1940 .and intended for safe-keeping in the U. S., missed the last boat from Bordeaux: The ingenious French, members and employees of the Bloch Freres firm, divided the shipment into small lots and ,hid them from the invaders. Some were secreted in the North of France; some in the South; others in the Vosges mountains. Out of Hiding Now they have come out of hid- | ing. Only one of the original 25 | cases is lost. All the rest are here for gift-hungry Americans. Obvious at once in this collection of pre-war elegance is the fine

Dazzle Marks Apparel Gifts For the Gals
Hints for the Man With Checkbook
By NEA Service NEW YORK, Nov. 28.—The dazzle of this season's fashions, any eyeful of which may call for dark glasses, focuses its fullest rays on Christmas gifts of apparel marked for the gals. Even nylons, which at least one manufacturer claims will fill a portion of the demand of holiday shoppers, step into the razzle-dazzle with flirtatious tattoo designs indelibly inked on at knee or ankle. Christmas-marked negligees and slippers—always near the top of the list of every man who can take a hint—rival the fireworks of a shooting star. Almost as phenomenal, too, are slippers of gold kid, for example, which Delman designs with. curling toes like a harem queen's. Many of the super-glamorous hostess gowns owe their splendor “to two pleces—a sheath of crepe topped by a sleeveless floor-length coat of brocade. : New Jewelry

Hand Wrought Gifts Represent Luxury
By NEA Service Needle-worked or hand-sewn lovelies represent the luxury of rarity in a machine age and in a country of mass production. ; That's why you can thriftily fill in the gaps of a Christmas list with almost fabulous gifts, if you make them yourself. That's why in a year of shortages and high-priced merchandise the needlework counters are scenes of! big booms, fashionable pattern books are thumbed ragged, and buyers who anticipated all of this and laid in ample supplies look and act smug. ; For Glamour Gals
Knitters «are tackling everything from Argyle socks to sweaters that are healed for the smart ski-tralls, the buyers report. Needles are devouring yarn by the box to make infants’ sun-suits, bed jackets and

Hand-Blocked Designs The whole fashion trend of handkerchiefs may be considered to have been changed by the advent of the | firm of Bloch Freres. When in 1919 the firm was founded in Paris, handkerchiefs were for the most part a matter of conventional white squares, except for the traditional
heirloom laces which figured in bri- a
dal and courtly acquistions, { From the year Bloch Freres | opened their Paris office, the firm! introduced one novelty after an-| other. Brilliant colored handblocked handkerchiefs, now an accepted daily item, were introduced by them. Many designs were executed by the same French artists who paint important canvases. In this first peace-time shipment, unusual subtle and exuberant colors in hand-blocked designs, floral and geometric, appear in a diversity of color and design arrangements. Clipped-cord white and colored bordered styles and corded borders in white are also among them.
