The proposed design has been criticized primarily because it would depict Mr, Roosevelt standing, leaning on a cane and wearing a reefer cape. Critics maintain that he usually was seen sitting.

trolling the disease. Special vacclnations failed to provide adequate protection against the germs. Dr. Howard J. Shaughnessy and his associates report in the Journal of the American Medical Association that experiments on prisoners dem-

onstrated that the dysentery germs which are least serious for mice are able to produce a severe variety of the disease in man.

kept in an isolation ward in the prison, and all came through the experiment without harm.

Bacillary dysentery is an infec-

tious disease of the large intestine.

It is a severe illness, abdominal cramps, toxemia, Bacillary dysentery develops suddenly in two to seven days after exposure, although in the experiment with human volunteers the incubation period was seldom longer than 24 hours, The disease has a tendency to last two to three weeks unless treatment is given to shorten it. Chronic bacillary dysentery may develop following the acute stage, for intermittent attacks are often followed by periods in which the patient is in good health. The disease is not to be confused with chronic ulcerative colitis.

Before sulfa drugs were used in controlling bacillary dysentery, it was a common practice to give a purgative to clean out the howel. This practice has been abandoned, for it is not of value.
