Building Up

Of Its Defenses in Abiska

By FRANK ANGELO Times Spatial Writer FAIRBANKS, Alaska, Nov. 21.—

America is building up its defenses in Alaska. When an expansion program now under way is completed, thousands of men and about $100 million will have been poured into the territory to provide fields with runways ranging up to 18,000 feet in length. | Much of that activity will be centered on the outskirts of this boom-

: ‘minded town.

The work here already has start-

called satellite fleld about 20 miles away. New super-runways housing facilities for service per{sonnel and their families are major items on the building program.

More than 600 civilians, most of them construction workers from jthe States, are busy here at [moment and the number is pected to swell to 2000 by. midsummer. This is part of a contract that also covers expansion of Richardson field outside of Anchorage, develop ment of further facilities at Nome on the western tip of Alaska and in the Aleutian island chain. The work is expected to take about three years to complete, { All of this activity emphasizes {one factor about any future de{fense of Alaska. It will, because of | the terrain and lack of other trans- | portation facilities, be almost entirely an aerial affair.

Air-Minded People

As far as transportation is concerned, for example, there are three convenient, but highly vulnerable, overland routes into the interior of Alaska: One, via the Alaska highway through Canada; one, by rail from the port of Seward and rail and road from Anchorage, and one, by road from Valdiz, Even so small a group as Task Force Frigid, which is staging: coldweather tests at Ladd fleld, virtually tied up the Alaska transportation system when it came up from California by boat and rail in midSeptember, It took almost a week to complete the 500-mile movement of 1500 men and some 500 vehicles from Seward. The importance of aerial thinking for the army is doubly stressed by civilian activity here. Per capita, Alaskans are the most air-minded people in the world. They have to be tc move very far and very often. The army's program undoubtedly will serve to boost civilian air transport even more. A spacious, well equipped passenger terminal has been built at Ladd field and it is being shared by army and civilian air travelers now. It is expected to be turned over entirely to civilian use at an |early date.
