Woman's Viewpoint— Hard Work Is a Remedy For Worry

By MRS. WALTER FERGUSON Scripps-Howard Staff Writer WHAT DO YOU do when you feel a spell of the blues coming on? Everyone has a pet remedy. I've found that hard physical work is the best cure. Nothing the psychiatrists have thought up is as good as a wrestle with household if order and dirt. You get up on a dark morning | with the hit-bottom feeling. Seems | there i8 no purpose in living. Or| perhaps Fate has dealt you a blow! and there's nothing you can do about it. ! Ah, but you can! For that is the | momant to pitch in and wash the woodwork, or clean the kitchen cupboards, or rearrange the furniture. Men, I suppose, should get at their office files, or put in an extra spurt at the favorite hobby. = = ANY FURIOUS physical activity | gets rid of emotional turmoil. Suddenly you learn what a privilege it is that we were doomed to earn our bread by the sweat of the brow. As muscles tire, nerves lose tension, ! and the mind is freed of fears. | Then, after work comes sleep—and the sleep induced by physical tiredness is the sweetest of all rest. Considering how many have | found labor a remedy for worry, it | is strange to see humanity striv-| ing for a workless society. Yet we all clamor for shorter hours. | Gadgets by the millions have been | invented to lighten our labors. | And isn't it true that the more gadgets men get the more‘they take to strong drink and crime? And the more devices we supply housewives, the more nervous breakdowns they suffer? Maybe we aren't so smart, after] all. When we finally achieve the]

Route to | Broadway !

Dancer Has to Watch Clothes Costs, Too

By BARBARA BUNDSCHU ° United Press Staff Correspondent NEW YORK, Nov. 20~The gif who's hitting Broadway for a job can do it successfully in the same wardrobe as an aspiring .stenogras pher, And if she's small and y \ she should be able to keep up wit! the glamorous theatrical world on & clothes budget of $500 a year, That's the advice and e of pretty junioresized Jane Deere

+|ing, who danced her way from Phil«

adelphia to New York when she was . 12 and has now grown up to her third featured role in “Three to Make Ready.” ' *One Good Suit’ The looks that catch a director's eye, Miss Deering says, are the same neat, clean and well-groomed ones that appeal to the office man ager hiring a typist. The only pose sible exception to that rule, she says, is when applying for a characs ter part. Even so, the turnip-chews ing image ‘of Mrs. Jeeter Lestef might ‘well be passed up for a girl who looked as if she knew better. Miss Deering says she's handled her success with a wardrobe pivoted on one good tailored suit, a basig black dress and a variety of bl and costume jewelry shopped f at sales. She brightens up an occas sional blouse or scarf with dimé store sequins, sewed on behind the scenes as she waits for a cue. » The same clothes do for auditions and private life, she says, with thé dancer's addition of a practice cos« tume—about $1 worth of material and a handy needle—opera hose and toe shoes, No Evening Gowns The young actress shops with an eye for fashions which won't go out . of style overnight—“the girl on a budget has to bé more conservae tive” and her $500 yearly budget assumes there's a suit and dress or two left over from the year before or the year before that. Her major purchases this winter were a black velvet and wool dressy suit, at $35; two dresses, black ¢repe and beige wool at about $15 each, Her price line is conveniently lowered by her junior size, but even & queen-sized aspirant could make do on slightly more. Evening dresses didn't enter the budget. There may be one in the closet against an important funce tion, but like most other successful career girls around town, Miss Deering finds her little black dress is as big a hit in the Stork club as anything else.
