SONG LYRICS WRITER DIES

Held in Florida.

Services for J. Will Callahan, song lyrics writer who formerly lived in Indianapolis, will be held tomorrow afternoon at New Smyrna Beach, Fla, where he died Friday. He was 73. Best known among the lyrics he wrote are the words to “Smiles” which was popular several years ago. During his lifetime, however, he wrote about 300 songs with the assistance of his wife, Mrs, Nannie Wallace Callahan, who served as his secretary. Among his best known songs are “Tell Me,” “Patches” “After All" “A Little Birch Canoe and You," “Give Me One Rose to Remember,”

He had made his home at New Smyrna ' Beach for the past 20 years. Besides his wife, survivors are a sister, Miss Martha J. Callahan, New Syrna Beach; three nieces, Miss Jessie Callahan, Miss Bernice Callahan and Mrs. Noble Wood, and a nephew, Courtland C. Cohee, all of Indianapolis.

Word has’ been received here of the death Saturday in New Orleans, La. of John Herbert Matthews, former Indianapolis resident and world war II veteran. He was 46, Mr, Matthews was fatally injured when he fell from a ladder while installing a radio aerial. A former colonel in the signal corps, he was a radar expert.
