By JIM G. LUCAS Scripps-Howard Staff Writer WASHINGTON, Nov. 16.—Within a week the navy will have only two battleships in active status, One will be in the Atlantic and one in the Pacific. All others of the once powerful fleet of more than 20 are being laid up in various forms and degrees. The idea is to present the incoming Republican congress with an accomplished fact of economy. Vice Adm. Forrest P. Sherman, deputy chief of naval operations, said today the navy would meet Republican economy demands as voiced by both Rep. Martin (Mass), who is to be the next speaker, and

And the Game's A Sellout, Too
State police this morning unsuccessfully broadcast an order to stop Mr. and Mrs. Joe Kalbeck of Worthington, O., who were blithely on the way to the Ohio State-Illinois football in Champaign, IU, Not that the police wanted to interfere with the couple's enjoyment of the game, They wanted to inform them that when they left the Riley hotel in Greenfleld, where they spent last night, they forgot their suitcase. The tickets to the game were inside the bag.

GATES STUDIES NEW FIRE LAW
Action Stems From -Fatal Terre Haute.Burning.
Governor Gates today studied the possibility of a state law which would clarify fire protection ree sponsibilities of Indiana cities. The governor said he would cone sider legislation to avoid duplication of a situation such as that existing at Terre Haute, where the city refuses fire protection to cere tain property owners involved in an annexation dispute. , Governor Gates criticized officials of Terre Haute and Harrison ‘township for “failing to act wise ly" in the annexation controversy, which gained statewide attention last week-end with the fire death of 21-months old Mary Ann Wil. ber, The little girl was burned to death when fire destroyed the fame fly home outside the city limits, while city firemen, acting on muse nicipal orders, refused to answer the fire alarm. “Matters of this character should have been so handled that protec tion was afforded for life and property in that community,”s the governor sald. ! _ State Fire Marshal Carter I. Bowser previously handed Governor Gates a report of his investiga« tion of the girl's death. Mr. Bowser believed the child's life “could not have been saved had the fire department responded,
