‘Mrs. America’ Is to Be
Chosen Today
Winner to Be Picked Among Young Wives
By MARTHA COBLE United Press Staff Correspondent ¢ JACKSON, Miss, Nov. 13.—Mrs. America of 1946 will be chosen today. She may be from South Carolina, Brooklyn or Nebraska. She could even be an Australian war bride from New Orleans. Whoever she is, she will be selected by a group of nationdlly known judges to succeed Mrs. Peggy Payne of Atlanta, Ga. as America’s loveliest young wife. _ The judges, who so far naven't agreed on certain matters, including bathing suits, were Decorator-Illug-trator Russell Patterson; Arthur William Brown, president of the Illustrators’ society; Cover Artist Bradshaw Crandall; Bert Titcomb of the Titcomb Advertising agency, New York, and a woman—Edith Balfore Dunn, merchandise editor of Today's Woman magazine. $2500 in Cash The winner—whether she be redhaired Mrs. Fredda Aker of Anderson, 8. C,, green-eyed Mrs, Cleonice Trapini of Brooklyn, Mrs. Donna Vestelle of Nebraska, or one of 17 other beauties—will receive a cash prize of $2500 and a tour of the nation as a fashion model. The Mrs. America contest is sponsored by the Robert D. Sanders Industries of Jackson. Proceeds from it will be donated to the Hinds County (Miss.) Cancer clinic. All the judges are married. Each of the male judges has his own idea about beautiful women. ‘Never Met Her’
Mr. Crandall says the most beautiful woman he ever saw was his wife. - Mr, Patterson said he never * met the most beautiful he ever saw —she was riding on a Lexington ave. bus in New York, : Mr. Brown said he thought it would be hard for any woman to match the beauty of Model-Movie Star Anita Colby. But the judges were agreed on one thing: They liked the idea of the contestants being married. “I like the woman who wants to stay beautiful all her life,” said Mr. Brown.
