“i Weelds Accolade Goes To Pessimist Leahy
Tie Disappointed Iris Irish Coach,
But He Upheld
His Record
Of Keeping Army Scoreless
By CARL LUNDQUIST, United Press Sports Writer
NEW YORK, Nov. 13.—Nobody
scored, but for his boys it was a
0-to-0 “victory” and his legion of followers all over the globe will never regard it as anything but a glorious triumph.
Personally,
he scorns any praise as much

to nothing and his disappointment was as keen as if his team
had been drubbed unmercifully. Moreover, he doesn't think “the lads” will win another game all season. But if he is serious, he isn't kidding anyone but himself. He is the No. 1 pessimist in the business, but the records show that his opponents should be the glum ones— and they invariably are at the finish. : _He's the United Press coach of the week, Frank Leahy of the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame, who stopped Army’s all-victorious threeyear march at 25 straight.
Avenge Humlliating Defeats The great Army backs, Glenn Davis and Felix Blanchard, who had steam-rollered team after team for three seasons, were kept thoroughly in check and in the end there was revenge for a Notre Dame
team that had suffered humiliating 48-t0-0 and 59-to-0 defeats to Army in 1945 and 1044, Leahy kept intact his record of never yielding a point to Army in the four seasons his teams have faced the Cadets, in 1941, 1942, and 1943, before he went into the navy, and this year in his first post-war season. He is the most pessimistic big time coach since the heyday of “Gloomy Gil” Dobie, the Cornell cry-baby, and his dark outlook stems from his first season as head coach at Boston college. He predicted a victory and the team lost. After that experience he told friends, “Never again will I predict one of my teams will win.” He hasnt either. He Can’t Tolerate Errors He is a perfectionist and though he is close to his boys he can't tolerate mistakes. Once this season when the Irish were going through a poor practice session he called a halt and said: “Lads, there is only one course open to us. We must go back to bedrock fundamentals and start all over. Now look, this is a.football.” Fullback Jim Mello, who had been making most of the mistakes, raised his hand for permission to speak and Leahy asked, “What is it James?” “Coach, would you mind going a little slower and take one thing at a time?” Mello asked. The wisecrack broke the tension and the rest of the practice clicked with precision. Leahy, who is modest to a fault about his own talent, says the 1946
most coachable groups of boys I have ever worked with.” “I appreciate the chance to coach them, but I realize, too, that any of 50 or 100 former Notre Dame men now in the coaching fleld could do as well or better with them than I have.” Leahy, a member of Knute Rockne’s undefeated national champion Notre Dame eleven in 1929, is a native of O'Neill, Neb., and grew up in Winner, 8. D,, a town that became synonymous with the kind of football teams he turned out. He became line coach at Georgetown in 1931, the first year after his graduation from Notre Dame and joined another ex-Irish star, Jim Crowley as assistant coach at Michigan State in 1932. ~ Both Crowley and Leahy moved to Fordham in 1933 and the Rams had an era of great teams with Leahy’s work as line coach mainly responsible for producing the “seven blocks of granite” who led the Rams through one triumphant season after another; Family Misses Him He followed that up with his first tenure as a head coach at Boston college from 1939 and in two years
the Eagles won 20 out of 22 games for him. His big opportunity came when Elmer Layden resigned at Notre Dame and he took over there in 1941, rolling to eight victories and a tie in his freshman season when he was named “coach of the year.” Now back after a war career as an officer in the Pacific submarine command, he is firmly entrenched as one of the most brilliant mentors in the business. And if 14 to 16 hours of work a day during football season will produce winners, the Irish ‘aren't going to lose many games here out. That's the chief complaint his family has business. “We just don’t see much of him from August to December,” says his wife, the former Florence Reilly of Brooklyn, and his children, Florence, 6, and Jerry, 3, echo her sentiments.

© If you didn't realize that before, you probably did when you paid your fall installment of property taxes this time. Taxes are higher because people are demanding constantly increasing serviees from their governments. If something should happen to dry up any of the sources of necessary public rev. enue, either some important government func. tion would have to be discontinued, or the taxpayers would have to dig down in their pockets for more money. Take beer taxes, for instance. Under legal control they're a big help to every taxpayer. During the last fiscal year beer contributed-—in excise taxes and permit fees—the hugesumof $5,751,069 to Indiana state, local civic units and schools. If the bootleggers were suddenly to take charge, as they once did (and paid no taxes of course), every taxpayer would be called upon to pay an additional rate of at least 13 cents on each $100 of property valuation to make up for the beer taxes that would be lost. Moreover, beer helps ease the federal tax burden, too. Last year, Indiana-made beer alone paid Uncle Sam $20,894,055 in barrelage taxes. Look at-your tax receipt, and you can quickly see what the assistance of beer taxes means to you in these trying times.
