FIRE RULE STAYS AT TERRE HAUTE
Tragedy Fails to Swerve City Council.
P.)~Sherift John Trierweiler of Vigo county said today the city of Terre Haute was “legally right but morally wrong” in refusing to extend fire protection to suburban areas. City Attorney John M. Fi told nearly 100 neighbors of the william Wilbur family that no action would be taken in the controversial issue until the state fire marshal completed an investigation. Mary Ann Wilbur, 21 months, died in the blaze. The father and a brother escaped and her mother and another brother were away from home, Firemen said residents of Harrison township had fought an annexation plan and fire protection had been suspended by the board of public works, Mayor Vernon McMillan, returning hurriedly from a Canadian hunting trip, said the board would make no statement until the fire marshal reported to Governor Gates | on his findings in the case. “What if there is another fire?” a Highland resident inquired. Mr, Fitzgerald replied that “the city cannot be mandated under state law to send apparatus beyond the city limits.”
