PREDICT PRICES T0 ‘LEVEL OFF

Business Leaders Concede Rise But No Runaway.

By UNITED PRESS Spokesmen for the nation’s principal industries said today that some price increases would follow the government's removal of almost all price controls, but they said that prjces would not “run hog wild.” Instead, they said that some prices might rise sharply but would level off, much as the price of meat has done since ceilings were lifted., Some industry leaders pledged to hold price . increases to a minimum, . A poll of housewives in 10 major cities, meanwhile, showed that most of them believed prices would not skyrocket. Most were: pleased with the sweeping decontrol order in the belief that more consumer goods would become available, Comment from industry spokesmen: Food—The department of agriculture said food prices would aver- - age “materially higher” than they did a year ago. However, most food priceqceilings already had been removed in the décontrol movement of the last three weeks, Meat prices already had begun to level off. Spokesmen said most foods except

By S¢lence Service BERKELEY, Cal, Nov. 11. ~Why is the ocean blue? A new answer to this age-old question has been found in a newly reported research attempt to use light rays in anti-submarine warfare. In attempting to find ways of combatting German submarines, two American scientists discovered that there exist in every cubic inch of clear ocean water about a million and a half dust-like particles, each about one fifty-thousandth of an inch in diameter, ' These particles reflect sunlight back to the ocean surface. But the light that gets back to the surface bas been filtered; water absorbs the red and yellow colors of light, leav-

ing greens, blues and violets, the combination of which is the indigo blue common to deep ocean water, Some Saw Reflection of Sky Previously the scientific explana< tion for this color had been attributed to the scattering by molecules of water, just as the blue of the sky is explained by scattering due to air molecules. Less scientific explanations held that the ocean's color was a reflection of the blue

The scientists, Dr. F. A. Jenkins, profesor of physics at the University of California, and Dr. I. 8. Bowen, now director of the Mount Wilson Observatory, conducted the research in 1941 at the U. 8. Navy Electronics Laboratory in San Diego, using some of the facilities of the University of California's Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Light Penetrates 580 Feet Drs. Jenkins and Bowen found that the tiny particles played a major role in blocking their efforts to devise anti-submarine devices using light. They found, for example, that the billions of particles suspended in the ocean, intercepting light as it passes through water, set a limit of penetration of a ray of light at a maximum of 580 feet. This limitation eliminated hopes of silhouetting submarines by dropping airplane flares below them, since it was impractical below about 200 feet.. Scattering of light by the particles also prevented bouncing rays off submarines, similar to the use of radio waves in radar.
