‘The Stomach

i La

Protecting

From Cancer

‘Avoid Irritations’ Is Doctor's Advice

By JANE STAFFORD Science Service Staff Writer

WHEN CANCER attacks the stomach, the situation is vey grave becalise usually the cancer has progressed far, long before the condition is diggnosed. More knowledge is needed before complete prevention or, early diagnosis in every case of this kind of cancer will be possible, but we can all. learn to give our stomachs bet-

ter care to avoid the irritations

that may lead to cancer. Speaking on this subject at the

New York Academy of Medicine,|-

Dr. Frank E. Adair, of Cornell

Medical college, said:. “It is ah all] § too common habit of certain people| to drink soup, coffee and other bev-| & erages so hot that they must hurry| § their

the drink down because mouths are being burned; and once past the throat, what happens to the stomach when the scalding liquid hits it is a matter of indifference to them, the stomach having no particular sensation for heat, or excessive heat.”

» » = “THE LIQUID may be entirely too hot to hold the finger in, but the poor stomach has to take it, regardless, no matter what the damage to the stomach mucosa (lining).” #*The great American habit of the | drugstore lunch, where stenographers and business men snatch a quick sandwich and wash "it down with hasty gulps of hot coffee at the soda fountain, while the next customers “stand behind them breathing down their necks and trampling on their corns, is certainly not conducive to the peace and relaxation which should accompany mastication and the ins. gestion of food. “The stomach mucosa is a delicate biit jealous structure,” he explained, “It must be handled with proper respect because it has the power to throw out sufficient hydrochioric acid to burn a hole in the wall of the stomach. And once an ulcer develops, it is difficult to heal and becomes the source of a possible carcinoma (cancer). “I am not overlooking the old controversy of which came first, the ulcer or the carcinoma. But we do know that repeated healings of any ulcer, as, for example, & burn scar, brings with it the possibility of the development of a carcinoma.”

By LOUISE FLETCHER Times Woman's Editor THE DAY MAY come when it will be possible to have your phojograph reproduced upon your handbag. No one has said anything about it yet, but some recent news from the leather pegple brings the idea to mind. And it might be handy, at that. The glad tidings from the leather world is that there's a new process which permits any design and color to be transferred, to leather. : S80 far that means that color< ful plaids, herringbone tweed motifs and bright striped designs are being used by the Aris company on gloves of Decor leather. The’ designs repfgduced by this patented colorgraphic process are color-fast and washable, It took 25 years to perfect the process—and the gloves are, they say, just a forerunner of scores of accessories and costumes in Decor leather which will be introduced next year. On the 1947 list are shoes, belts, handbags, scarfs, weskits and hats. In the meantime, there are the Aris gloves in soft doeskin, priced at around $10. You can find them at Block's. Y

Ne ‘Rarebit’ The packing company explained that prices on pre-packaged frozen | foods will be higher because of ‘the costs of labor and necessary additional equipmerit and facilities. The women of America will give the answer-—they constitute 91 per cent of the food buyers in the country. William Foster of Borden Co. told the writers of a common mistake made in the making of a cheese dish. “There is no such thing as cheese rarebit,” he said. “It is cheese rabbit, named from the story of the Welsh king who had so many guests he melted theese to serve in place of rabbit.”* It will be early in 1948 before Eagle Brand milk will return to grocery shelves the company toid the conference.
