The diagram above and accompanying phofos are explained heré in detail fo provide voters complete instructions on how to cas

ballots on the voting machines.

Operation of the voting machine is a simple procedure more parties ‘as to mark a paper ballot, There are two types of voting machines used in Marion county.

It is easy to cast ballots for any combination of candidates in. two or

They differ only in the location of the big lever that opens the

machine for voting and closes it fo register the vote. The keys over the names of the candidates are a different shape on some ma-

chines but they work exactly alike, «

This is the first thing you do when you walk info the voting chine booth—pull all the way to the right the large redhandled lever in the middle of the machine. On some of the machines, this lever hangs down from the top and on others, like this photo, the lever is upright at the base of the machine. On either type pull the This un-

and automatically closes the curtain around you.

This illustrates how to vote a "straight" party ticket—that is casting your ballot for all candidates on one party ticket. After pulling the large lever to the right Yo unlock the machine, step over to the left side where there are five small party lévers. Select the lever over the name of your party and pull it to the right until a bell rings and let it flop back into place. If you are voting the straight party ticket and don't "scratch" any candidates, your

next step is to pull the large curtain lever (shown in top photo) back to the left. This registers your "straight" ticket vote and opens the curtain for

the next voter.

If you desire to "scratch," or in other words to vote for candidates in more than one party, the procedure is simple. First pull the lever of your party to' the right until the bell rings, und let it flop back. This, like the preceding process, turns down all the keys over the individual candidates in. that party. Next, look for the names of the candidates on that party ticket you DON'T want to vote for and turn the keys over those names back up to a horizontal position. keys over the names of candi-
