Their brief period of freedom was stopped short of 24 hours after they had escaped the penitentiary by swimming the Wabash river. Clifford Hanner, 22, San Francisco, was captured by a squirrel hunter a short distance west of Terre Haute. Mark Conklin of West Terre Haute turned the fugitive over to a posse which was searching for him in the area.
