Anderson, who makes a specialty
to his old tricks again today with the University of Iowa. Anderson came back to the Hawkeyes this fall after a three-year war-time .absence and found himself with the gloomiest prospects of any Western conference football coach. During the three seasons
Anderson was away Iowa won only four games while losing 20 and appeared a cinch to be a dowly second division finisher again. ; The outlook wasn’t helped any when Anderson underwent an operation and was hospitalized for a month, A two-man staff of Frank Carideo and Joe Sheeketski carried on during his illness.
Compared to ‘Iron Men’
But in the most unpredictable season in Big Nine history, Iowa) has been the big surprise team and it goes into the Midwest's headline game Saturday at Towa City against Notre Dame with a record. of four victories and one defeat. In some quarters the current Iowa outfit is being compared to the Hawkeyes’ last great team, the “iron men” of the 1939 season which the late Nile Kinnick paced to six victories and a tie in eight starts, for the school's most impressive gridiron record in 20 seasons. One of the notable victories of the 1939 campaign was a 7-t0-6 triimph over Notre Dame. This decision was matched the following | year when Iowa invaded the Irish| gridiron. : While Anderson’s current team
“iron men,” it depends on relatively few men for its punch and defensive stretch, y Eleven Substitutes Used In its victory Saturday over Indiana, Iowa used byt 11 substitutes. Iowa opened its season with al 39-to-0 triumph over North Dakota | State, then downed Purdue, 16 to 0,| was edged by Michigan, 14 to 7, and |

topped Nebraska, 21 to 7, before the Indiana conquest. The Hawkeyes have depended on Dick Hoerner, a 212-pound fullback who started at Iowa in 1942; Bob Sullivan, who played pre-war foot ball at Holy Cross; and Emlem Tunnell, a transfer from the University of Toledo, for their scoring punch, It is the big Iowa line, with the Schoener twins, Hal and Herb at the ends, that has been the key to the Hawks’ success however. In shutting out three of its five opponents to date, Iowa has proved to be one of the Midwest's finest defensive outfits, Notre Dame, with power, speed and reserves that go four deep, will rate as the pronounced favorite over Jowa but the Hawkeyes’ “comeback kids” are conceding the Irish nothing. In other Midwest games Saturday Illinois opposes Michigan; Indiana engages Nebraska; Minnesota plays Ohio State; Purdue meets Pittsburgh and the College of the Pacific tangles “with Northwestern,
Greenskeeper Keeps Golf Title
Emil Mashie, who keeps Lake Forest, Ill, green in tiptop shape, showed again that he knows how to use them, by winning his third National Greenkeepers’ association tournament. _ Mashie shot a 142, two strokes over par, in the 36-hole tour of the rolling. Indianapolis country club course yesterday. Despite the fact that it was his first game on the course, it was good enough to give him victory over a field of 75 opponents. Mashie has won every tournament held by the association. Ernie Jacobs of Pittsburgh was second with a 150, and Denton Carlton of Indianapolis third with 152.
