Playing of Condon's Band Superb in All Departments

By HENRY BUTLER There's no accounting for tastes. Eddie Condon’s jazz concert (as fine impromptu stuff as youll hear) played to a sparse audience last night at the Murat. “The “Hour of Charm” packed ‘em

in a week before, No need to elaborate the compar-

Last night's playing in every department was superb, from the drytinkly plano style of Jess Stacy to the marvelously accurate string bass

You can't break down a fine Jazz ensemble like that into individuals. Stacy at the piano, Ernie Caceres on the baritone sax and clarinet, Sidell on. the drums, Bailey on the clarinet, Bobby Hackett or Joe Town on the trumpet, Charley Castaldo on the trombone— they're equally good individually or

No Spotlight-Hogging Best of all, the venture is musically co-operative, be no spotlight-hogging soloists. And there's evidence of mutual ad-

Each performer deserves a whole If 1 can't give due credit to Cliff Jackson for his amazing slap-happy piano-playing (accurate, too, with a musically good bass-line outrageously arguing syncopatedly with the treble) or Mr. Castaldo’s (tone like a musically sentimental brazen burro), it's because space is/

Mr. Bailey's clarinet is as fine as 1've heard. Symphony ton tone, ‘which| (I

means clear and pure, plus great facility and imagination. I can't recall hearing any other clarinetist do such complicated and rapid figurations and still come out right cn the dotted note. Handy on Clarinet Mr. Caceres makes the baritone sax sound like a tenor sax whose voice is changing. Wistful tenor phrases are punctuated with surprising deep honks. He's mighty handy on the clarinet, too. Presiding was Mr. Condon, a Hoosler from Goodland, whose 'pokerface difidence was a welcome reilef from run-of-the-mill emcee exuber-

ance. | One criticism: in “Night and] Day,” rendered by Messrs, Stacy, Bailey, Sidell and Hall, the usual difficulty appeared in the “Whether near to me or far” sequence of ninth and seventh chords—bass and treble played the same notes. They shouldn't; it ain't cricket. In fact, according to harmony books, it's an offense called “parallel octaves.” Next Murat attractions will be Allan Jones, «of movie fame, with his concert troupe Saturday night -and' Dr. Tarbell, the magician, Sunday night.
