¥ Lou Little Wails as Loud _ | As Any ‘Monday Mourner, or ! Rates as U. P. Coach of Week
NEW YORK, Oct. 16 (U, P.).~When the Monday mourners get together for their “whine and dine” sessions he wails as loudly as the ost chronic. loser, yet on Saturday afternoons” his football ‘team onvinces him he had no reason to be pessimistic. His boys have come a long way from the dark days of 1943 when week after week an undermanned gang of kids that lacked everything but fight limped through an eightgame schedule and “lost 'em all.”
Things are better now and, though his « current - squad isn't rated” as - tops in the East, they're the sec-
tion's number one upsetters and ¢ are likely to spill a few more perBR fect records before the season runs | ts course. : He figures his boys will be victims number 23 in Army's three-year victory march Saturday and so do the odds-makers, but even ' the Cadets are-concerned over. just how powerful his team may be. He's the United Press coach of the week, Lou Little, for 17 years the mentor of Columbia's roaring Lions, Already this year Columbia has ruined the perfect records of twe Eastern hopefuls, first Navy and then Yale, and the Lions did it both times with great last-half stands. In‘the Navy game which Colum-
bia won in a 28-to-14 upset, the Lions took so much time between the halves that they were penalized 15 ‘yards before the first play. They shrugged that off and went on to run up two touchdowns and a field goal, erasing a 14 to 7 deficit. Last Saturday in the Yale bowl against a team that was regarded as the best to represent Eli in more than a decade, Columbia again trailed at half-time, 14 to 0. Putting on a drive that netted four touchdowns and a field goal in the second half, the Lions roared to a 28-to-20 victory despite the hazard of handling a wet ball on a slippery field. Little played four years of professional football as tackle and later coach of the Philadelphia Quakers and Frankfort (Pa.) Yellow Jackets. In ‘1924 he became coach at Georgetown and remained there until 1930 when he took over at Columbia.

I U. Shows Pass Defense
CHICAGO, Oct. 18 (U,P.) —"Bo” McMillin, the little gridiron wizard of Indiana university, today. solidifled his reputation as one of the nation’s top coaches in building a defense against a passing attack. McMillin twice has college All-Star teams to victory over the professional champions of the National football league and each time an extremely tight pass defense against two of the game's finest aerial artists—Sammy Baugh of the Washington Redskins and Bob Waterfield of the Los Angeles Rams-—has been instrumerital in leading to the triumph. As Indiana now battles in defense of its conference championship, the Hoosiers once more are proving rugged pass defenders. The latest official statistics released today show McMillin's outfit has permitted its three opponents to complete only 219° peg cent of their aerials. The passes have netted Indiana opponents an average of but 29.3 yards per game, Adept in Passing While showing this tight pass defense, Indiana has proved adept with its own forward passing. The Hoosiers lead in that department with an average gain of 132 yards per game through the air, Ben Raimondi; who led the Big Nine in passing a season ago with 31 completions in 62 attempts, now tops the circuit with 20 completions in 43 tosses. His completions have. netted 254 yards. Lou Mihajlovich, junior end, has ‘been Raimondi's = favorite target. Mihajlovich has caught nine passes to lead in that department,
