Briti sh Writer Believes U.S.

By EDWIN A. LAHEY . Times Foreign Correspondent ‘LONDON, Oct. 15.—Is the British female unattractive? It would be indeed boorish for an American to say so, after the Brit- | ish have been good énough to furnish a visa’ for an inspection of this short-rationed land, .But if’ the British complain about the matter themselves, it may reasonably be assumed to be a néws item. Richard Viner, a columnist in the | Daily Graphic, says that while Britaln is vindicating its ability to turn swords into plowshares, “there remains one Reid in which America

SCIENCE MAY
Electro Microscope Magnifies 200,000 Times.
. PRINCETON, N. J, Oct. 15 (U. P.) ~«Science may be able to see the atom through “the eyes of the electron microscope, thereby opening up new avenues of approach to the use of atomic energy in indusiry and medicine, Dr. James Hillier sald today. Mr. Hillier, who helped in the development of this super-migro-scope that does not use glass lenses, is working now on a new type electron machine at the RCA laboratories here. The electron microscope theoretically already can bring the atom into visible view, but the best results so far is magnification great enough to let the eye see a molecule which is composed of atoms. Magnified 200,000 Times This new model is 100 times stronger than the best of the ordinary visible microscopes, going up to magnification of. 200,000 times. The microscope stands about six feet high and its principle briefly 1s to generate electric beams which are shot through magnetic fields, serving as lenses, onto the ‘speci"n being examined. The magnification shows on a | fluorescent screen, similar to that | used in television. With a flip of a {switch, the.screen can be removed j= the magnified specimen photographed. The exposure is usually] a to five seconds. Biologists do not seem concerned {that live tissue or cells may not be {used in the electron microscope. | They feel that the greater magnifi- | cation far exceeds that disadvant- | age. The specimen must be placed {in a vacuum which naturally would Fond it out and kill it. Even then if the specimen were not killed, the powerful electric beams would finish {the job. In some casés the elec- | tronbeams have disturbed the make-
