Too bad the setting, the publicity,
a better show than last night's » toward: the whole idea of the “Hour of “ y 1 > Haut ‘of (Chazm, Which played at! Charm” has to be so phony, so
cheaply artificial. Miisie i$n't bath-salts, disposable | {tissues or any other drugstore com“I modity. Yet last night's stage setting had metropolitan skyscral. ers (on the backdrop) looking like per-fume-atomizers emitting beams of scent. Suggests Svengali
And the entire notion of girl musicians being able to produce music only under the watchful eye of a conductor whose personality vaguely suggests George Du Maurier’s Svengali, Bela Lugosi and a Carolina tortoise is repugnant. The term “vulgarity” suggests to a lot of people something unclean. It. has another sense. When sincere, talented human beings are compelled to reduce their accomplishments to an incredibly low | [standard of sentimentality and "llushness, the ‘result may. be described as vulgar. That's been apparent in this show on the air, and is still more apparent on the stage. Girls Do Right Well Here's another exploitation of the outdated popular notion that | women can't produce good music. In music, it's supposed to be a {man's world. So if you organize a | girls’ band, you surround it with a leloud of perfume, sentiment and cuteness, occasionally (for the pop{ular appeal) injecting. either Gounlod's or Schubert's “Ave Maria.” The number of women doing first-rate work in orchestras like the Indianapolis Symphony and other big-time bands. means something. Musié * is music. The gals did right well, maestro or no maestro, {1ast night. Some of them would do a lot better if they were given a chance and could get away from the corny notions.that have always characterized the “Hour of Charm.” Last night's audience liked the program.
