Weapon in F

PRINCETON, N. J., Sept. 30 (U. P.).—~The use of a new weapon in the war against cancer was reported at - the scientific conference at Princeton university. This new weapon is the electronic microscope, which was developed some years ago but applied only recently to the research into the cause of cancer, The advantages of this atomic age machine—more than a thousand times stronger than the usual visible microscope—were outlined by Dr. Francis O. Schmitt, head of the biology department pf the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “It.opens a new era into our research,” he said.

'Atomic Spectacles’ Newest

ight on Cancer

Dr. Schmitt emphasized that to get at the real cause of cancerous or other abnormal growths, science rust learn more about the mechanism and the structure of the human life cell. It has been calculated that there are about one thousand million million cells in the human body. To study the growth of these cells,

scientists are primarily interested || in the fibrous tissue proteins which | |

have much to do with the structure of the cells in the human body. , And for that matter, they also have that all important duty in the lowest form of animal life, even the one-cell organisms. Dr, Schmitt said that before a cure or cause of cancer could be

determined, it was necessary that |} 3 science learn all there is to know!

about the growth of normal life cells.

put on their “atomic spectacles” and peek more deeply into this problem, Dr. Schmitt said that the research into cancer is handicapped. This new weapon is being used in numerous laboratories around the country. It sees things that the ordinary microscope can't possibly detect.

ANNUAL LUNCHEON SET

The Women’s Lions club of Indianapolis will hold its annual guest day luncheon Wednesday at the Lincoln hotel. Mrs. J. OC. Hirschman will give a book review and Mrs, J. B. Glanton will preside.
