Indiana State Is Next Foe For Bulldogs

Coach Tony Hinkle will take his Butler Bulldogs into Indiana conference company next Saturday at the Butler bowl, with Indiana State’s Sycamores as guests and foes. The Bulldogs had thelr first public showing in Saturday afternoon’s heat, scored three first-period touch« downs, permitted two to Eastern Illinois State in the third quarter

and came out with a 19-12 victory in what eventually became a hottempered affair. The Bulldogs’ biggest shortcoming in their opéner was their lack of aerial defense, and it's a sure thing Hinkle will devote plenty of {practice time this week: to this phase lof Butler's game. Pass Defense Weak

Both Eastern Illinois touchdowns came on pass plays, although in fairness to Butler, it must be pointed out that one was strictly a fluke. The ball bounded off a couple of chests before it plopped into. the hands of an eligible receiver on the goal line. But the Panthers’ other score was an aerial to a lone gentleman who went completely unmolested from the time he caught it until he crossed the goal. Orville Williams, former Crispus Attucks star, set up the first Butler touchdown and also scored it on a pretty 27-yard pass from Jim McLinn, Tom Sleet plowed over for the second Butler score shortly afterward, and the Butler line got a share of the glory on the third marker. Set back to its own six-yard line, Eastern Illinois attempted to kick out, but End John McHugh broke through the reputedly rugged Panther line, blocked the punt and fell on the ball in the end zone for the score.
