‘Are Toy Guns Harmless Playthings?’
By MRS. WALTER FERGUSON Scripps-Howard Staff Writer A WOMAN with wide experience in child training wonders why so many four-year-olds are allowed to play with toy guns. “In our neighborhood,” she says, “they snap them into ‘each other's faces and their favorite pastime is hold-up and robber games. influence will this have upon their minds?” f
J] td o GUN-TOTING is against the law I think even possession should be.! Having written on this subject be-! fore, however, I know the yells of rage the suggestion will bring. Thousands of accidental killings take place annually because loaded guns are ‘lying around in many homes. Murder is often committed because a weapon is within easy reach. : There are two sides to the argument of course. But now that so many of our young men have learned about the use of guns in service, it seems more sensible than ever to limit their possession. tL J » ”n AS FOR THE youngsters—surely parents may be inviting disaster when they provide toy pistols for little boys. Boys will be boys, we all say.’ It’s true. But it is also true that a good little boy easily can become a bad man when he is allowed to imagine that highway robbery is a glamorous trade and gunmen are heroes. If -we believe that the impressions made” upon a child go with him through life, then we certainly cannot argue that toy guns are harmless playthings.
