Life Is Austere

Most certainly England is leading an austere life these days. Shocking when: you first come into it from America. Clothing, food, gasoline and even soap all still are rationed here. No one goes hungry, but the average person lives on a drab, unin-| teresting diet practically devoid of, such everyday necessities as fruit and eggs. Most hotels supply neither soap nor towels. As for clothing, there are few well-dressed persons in London these days. Thirty coupons per six months do not permit the purchase of more than a small fraction of one’s needs. For example, a man’s suit costs 26 of his 30 coupons, a pair of shoes nine and a shirt five, while a

11, shoes seven and stockings, whey available, three. Most English women go bare-legged. Tipping Is Nuisance

I have just come to London from New York. From a check of stores

the bulk of Britain's woolens are going into the great export drive to get dollars. As a consequence, American citizens with the price to buy imported woolens and other luxury goods are enjoying things which the average Englishman is going without. And, as an inevitable consequence | of the Spartan sacrifices English- | men are asked to endure now for! the sake of strengthening their nation's economy, tipping has become a greater nuisance than every be- { fore, There is also a vigorous black | market. Everyone here, as at home, has { his hand out. Some housewives have | [told me they even have to tip their! | grocers daily to get a decent break | {in the limited quality and choice of food stuffs available. Their tips often come. to almost as much as the price of the foodstuffs. Shopping here, too, involves tedious hours of | \waiting in line, then lugging purchases home. No deliveries. Sacrifices Paying Off

The necessity for Britain to im‘port much of her food constitutes the crux of the food problem. There has not been sufficient of the precious foreign exchange to buy all} that might be desired. | And even if there had been, there | would not have been enough ships | 'to bring it all in. Too many ships have been needed for other things such as the export trade. Financial circles, however, agree that John Bull's sacrifices are paying off. English economy is con- | siderably better off now, they say,
