Marriage Counseling Urged To Prevent Many Divorces

Hundreds of divorces in Indianapolis could be prevented by establishment of a proper marriage coun seling bureau here, declared Dr.

| Paul Popenoe, director of the Amer= ican Institute of Family Relations, in a lecture at the Second Presby-

“Many marriages go to the divorce courts because of some compara'tively minor misunderstanding of personalities which |

could be corrected with proper counseling,” Dr. Popenoe said. Speaking at a social workers’ meeting, sponsored by the Indianapolis Church Federation, the Tam[tly relations expert urged social groups, church leaders and educators to establish a counseling center where troubled couples could go for advice. “Of course a counseling bureau cannot solve all the problems of marriage, hut. we have discovered that it prevents a large number lof broken homes,” he said. Victims of ‘Romantic Complex’ He asserted that many persons in marriage dre victims of some “‘romantic complex” and when they {learn that their emotional ideas of {marriage are not what they ex- | pected them to be, the only procedure they know is the divorce Sourse.

Popence outlined the tech-| os procedures for proper mar- | | riage counseling, explaining that al- | most any educator or social worker | could learn methods af giving ad|vice that would keep hundreds of | marriages off the rocks.

“For one thing, counseling can | 3

prove to hundreds of troubled couples that the adjustments they |will have to make after getting a | divorce are much more difficult than

the adjustments’ they are having to |g

make in marriage,” he said.

will be necessary to insure comfort during the winter, 100 students can be housed in the state-owned structure, the governor said. The hotel normally is closed during winter months. The conservation department, in

(turning over the building to the uni-

versity, said the state would make no alterations. Department officials estimated that cost of installing “adequate heating facilities” would run approximately $8000. Earlier this week, Canyon Inn at McCormick's Creek state park near Spencer was turned over to Indiana

university for four months’ use by married veterans attending the state school.
