WARNING GIVEN ON NEW LAWNS .

Slow Fertilizers For Seedling Grass.

®: many new lawns in preparathis fall the question arises bout what fertilizer to use.

In general it’s better not to use hemical fertilizers at the same ime you sow your grass seed. ‘here's too much danger of burnng seedling grass. Any seed germimates better in soil that is not too ich, Chemical fertilizers are much etter used in fhe spring when rass is growing rapidly. Organic fertilizers as = distinuished from the inorganic or hemical types are made from slowr acting materials. Cottonseed 1eal, bone meal, like the dried fish he Indians put under each hill of orn, are organic fertilizers. They become only slowly available ) are much safer. Cottonseed meal i high in nitrogen, the element 1at grass, like lettuce and cabage, needs in. particular. Bone eal with less nitorgen, more“phosorus, is ideal for fall use on flower ods.

Time Improves Texture

One grass seed company puts out turf builder which combines quick | nd slow acting ingredients in the | roportion best suited to grass. It expensive but good. Animal manures should be used aly when well decomposed. Even ), they may bring weed seeds into pwn. Steam dried manure overthis objection. Sewage sludge at the disposal plant) adds umus, some nitrogen. It makes od topdressing for established wns. Consider that if your soil has a ndency to dry out “hard as a ick” in dry weather, lime will im‘ove its consistency, much as stirng breaks up the big curds in avy cottage cheese. For lime is ieful not only to change alkalinity soil but tb improve its texture, 0. It is best worked into the soil some depth before planting. Maximum rate of application i550 s. to 1000 sq. ft.

he used part of an old wardrobe to build his open shelves.

Living Room Lines Improved The single thin board that made the original mantel was taken off and a-box mantel with heavier lines was built to reach across that end

of the room tying bookcases, shelves and fireplace into a single unit. To finish off the modernizing he enameled the woodwork old ivory. Then Mrs. Knight “mixed up some- odds and ends of paint — I could never produce that same color again,” she.said, and painted the interior of the opén shelves a deep turquoise. This blue is the basis of the color scheme for the living room. With colored glass at the small windows on either side above the mantel the fireplace unit is not just attractive in itself, but it also Serves to improve the lines of what had been a too long, too narrow living room. Striped wallpaper also | distracts the eye up and down away from the long lines of the room. The doorway to the dining room | | with bookcases and colunins removed was now too wide. So Mr. {Knight lathed and plastered it to ‘make a standard 4'%-foot archway. And that led to another problem. The adjoining doorway, leading up- | stairs, with its heavy dark frame made an unpleasant contrast to the

Mark off the area for the new window, chip off plaster. Clean up the plaster before finishing the job on the outside. Mark the window area with plumbing and pencil, sawing the clapboards on the mark.” Changes throughout the rest of the house correspond. HOUSING EFFORT PROGRESS SEEN

Expediter , Says 225,000 Units Completed.

" Completion was registered for 225,000 of the 496,000 housing units the first six months of 1046, National Housing Expediter Wilson W. Wyatt announced last week. Mr. Wyatt gave the figures in his second monthly progress report to the nation and said that in view of the expanding demand for building materials in the wake of a wartime famine, the results are far better than had been anticipated. New permanent homes and apartments represented 153,000 of the completions, while 72,000 were temporary reuse structures, conversions and trailers. Practically all of the 1945 units, which had to compete for scarce materials with 1946 building, have been completed. Record Rises Steadily Mr. Wyatt stressed that the record of completions this year has risen steadily, despite abnormal conditions, so that the number of units finished in June was 75 per cent above that of January,

red, green, and gold leaves of tiny crotons on sale at various plant stores entice the optimistic plant lover, But all' too often (guess how I know!) when they're removed from the warm, moist atmosphere in which they thrive they quickly drop those bright leaves and you have a stick of a stem to throw away. Mrs. Steinberg’s plant, one of the twisted leaved varieties, has never been repotted. “I guess it just throve on neglect,” she laughed, “for I haven't fertilized it either, just added some fresh soil occasionally.” "And it seems that Mr. Steinberg “once dropped some vitamin B tablets into the pot when I didn't know about it!” nN. 8 BY OCTOBER, she explained, the leaves get quite large, ‘then they begin to twist and turn red. Experimenting this summer, she found

boards underneath store extra flower pots and dishes. At one end the telephone stands on a square of glass under which is a slip of frequently called telephone numbers and the month's appointments for Mrs. Knight's church work. The old pantry is now a pleasant breakfast room, the kichen has plenty of cupboards and the corner cupboard in the dining room Mr. Knight built during still another vacation. Through its glass" doors colored glass sparkles against the sunny yellow interior. All the woodwork is old ivory. (By Marguerite Smith.)

{HERE'S HOW TO FIX

BROKEN LIGHT PLUG

How to repair an electric. cord broken at the plug. Disconnect. Then unscrew the two screws that hold wires in place under the cap. Remove wires from plug. Cut the cord above the break. Put the wire through the plug again from the round side. Remove the wire's covering for about an inch from the end. Two smaller wires are revealed. Remove the insulation covering each of these. Scrape them gently until they are bright so they will make good contacts. Twist the strands of each wire together to make two tight ends. Wind one wire around each screw plug, winding clockwise. If they are wound in this direction the tightening of the screw will also tighten the wires for better contact. Inspect to see that the bare portions of the two wires do not come in contact with each other, Cut off loose ends, To make a really professional job, insert one extra step after the two small wires are revealed, and before their insulation are removed. Knot the wires together (this relieves strain on either of the single portions) and wrap the knot with

\iriction tape for further insulation.

Humidity is more pecessary to young plants than to those already adjusted to dry household alr. Glass plant cases give them ideal conditions, but you can also provide moist air around the plants by spraying the leaves daily. A well-kept croton makes a cheerful winter centerpiece for the table though it should go back to its sunny window between occasions, » » » MR. STEINBERG, who likes to experiment with his vegetable garden (as well as with his wife's house plants) this year tried out mulching paper on his tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers. He's found it worked so well to keep down weeds without cultivation and - preserve soil moisture, especially on his cucumbers, that he plans to repeat and perhaps extend his paper mulch next year, Mr. and Mrs. O. c. Taylor, 2825 W. Michigan st, have a hobby common to many gardeners—they collect rocks and shells in their travels. And they've found a way to use them in their double pool and rockery to which they've given up most of their backyard, Mr. Taylor began it by making] a single pool about eight years ago. The rock collection grew so he made another pool.
