most, for she had planned to show her line at the Be! ‘Air hotel and with—-so0 the local press says—the most elaborate of props and dinners. : Instead, the collection was reviewed in the downtown showroom and the dinner was cleverly and quickly contrived by the staff from wafers and fish pastes. Keneth Hopkins, one of the most noted of the cguntry’s millinery designers (who will be in Indianapolis this fall for a personal appearance at Block's) got in just under the line. The culindry workers strike was called five minutes after the last ‘croissant had -been crumbled at his brunch showing, ’ Dinner at Home Joseph Zukin suffered not at all: As scheduled, his Lou Van Roy designed collection was shown at the Zukin home on Benedict Canyon drive in Beverly Hills. . There was some thought on the part of the editors of staying with the Zukins for days, but, remembering how they had been caught with the telegraph wires down during the

they decided to rough it at their strike-bound hotels. And the fashion points that weathered these embarrassments? Well, with Hopkins hats it's the brushed felt group in a shade he calls California champagne (gray beige) as far as these eyes can discern. Bra Is ‘Epidemic’ This series includes a bonnet, beret, stovepipe, cavalier's and off-the-facer. And they're piped and

velvet—wine, spruce, royal blue. The ostrich “boas” he uses around the brims of dress hats and allows to trail over the shoulder are new, too. At Zukins’' you had to acknowledge the Importance of the bra that is epidemic in the California collections. Remember the bandeau? Well, forget it. This year's bra not only has a divided front, but it V's from the bottom—not the top. The {fabric —what there is of it—covers the lowest section of the rib cavity, swoops way up to form a 60-degree angle at the lower edge of the bazoom, You're right. It’s a little breathtaking (but better than bandeaus —anything is). : Fabrics Star And Pat Premo, as always, had the most fascinating fabrics in the market. As an example: Cotton | taffetas worked out in stripes and checks and colored with all the subtlety of silk. And a whole series worked around “chocolate and marshmallow” (medium brown and white) birdseye pique. But her golf dress with the skirt zipper that 1s opened to show bloomer pants if the day is that hot, and her patented action back with the elastic insert in the cording at the walist—that will make for the good ole days with sportswomen. It was functional American design at its best.
