Fond Pet Owners Like To Get 'Em in Movies
By VIRGINIA MacPHERSON United Press Staff Correspondent
HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 19.—Not all
casting directors around town get to spend their time ogling pretty girls. Take Lee Sheldon. Sheldon’s the animal prop man at Warner Brothers. Whenever a script calls for a dancing horse or a singing parrot, Warner Brothers call for him. “After all,” he grins, “somebody has to handle things like that. And it pays well.” Mr. Sheldon knows where to dig up any kind of animal a wild-eyed script writer dreams up. And if he can't find one around these ‘parts, he can always refey to his correspondence file. He gets hundreds of letters every month from fond animal owners. Ambitious mamas who -scramble to get their off-spring on the screen are mild compared to the people who write him. Letters From All Over World
“They come in from all over the world, these letters,” he said. “And you'd be surprised how many people try to get their. pets on the screen.” If, for instance, he ever needs a pet moose, he’s got a lady in Wyoming who can supply same. A gal in Long Beach, Cal, has a tame ground owl she hints she'd be willing to share with movie customers —provided a nice, fat salary check goes with it, of course. “Owners very seldom get rich from work their pets do in movie work,” Mr. Sheldon explained. “Except maybe the people who own Lassie or Daisy. Not even a hippopotamus trainer, who can haul in a cool $100 a day. But hippos don't work very often.” Almost every animal he needs is within telephone reach, Mr. Sheldon added. Néver Throws Away a Letter “Lots of circuses come to Hollywood: for the winter. From them we can get elephants, lions, tigers, and zebras. Trained dogs are plentiful. And when we need a cat, we just call in one from the Warner Brothers cat family.” : Most of the pet owners realize this, but still the letters come pouring in. “My parrot sings "How Dry I Am,” wrote an enthusiastic lady from Yonkers, N. Y. “How much would you pay for his services?” “1 never throw away a letter. offering some freak animal for picture use,” he said. “You never can tell when I'll need a cat that barks) like a dog or a canary that sings “The Star-Spangled ,Banner.'” —_—f—e

Negro to Play White Stage Role
BOSTON, Sept. 19 (U. P.).—Negro Actor Canada Lee will put on white makeup here Monday night in probably the first attempt of a colored nian to portray a white character on the American stage The precedent will be set in the play, “The Duchess of Malfi,” starring Elisabeth Bergner at the Shubert theater. A spokesman for Producer Paul Czinner said it had not been determined” what type of paint and lotions would be used for Lee's transformation. Czinner chose him for a part in the play when it became necessary to replace Mc Kay Morris, white actor who had béen first choice for the role. It was said to be the first time in theatrical history a producer had selected the man he considered the best actor for a role, regardless of color. Lee, a: former boxer, played in New York in “Native Son” and “Or Whitman Avenue,” appearing as a Negro in both,
