Black Paint, Plus Decorative Sense, Eliminates Job of
Washing White Woodwork |
you “just love to wash wood " read no more-—this couldn't possibly - interest you. But Mrs. Ora Smith, 939 Shelby
| ot, solved a variety of problems in : her clevetly decorated kitchen when ' she decided to paint ber wood work
. black.
“I love white wood work,” she said, “but we get factory smoke
| #8 well as furnace smoke here in
winter. And white wood work must . be washed often if it's to look really nice.” . She washes her black wood work twice a year, polishing it afterwards with a soft cloth to restore the sheen. One Coat Did Job
She did all the painting herself,
_ slightly sanding the jade green
enamel already on ‘it, before she painted. One coat of black covered it. It has not been repainted since ' she put on the original coat of black seven years ago, “I think it really ought to have another coat this year, though,” she said. She will do it again in black. Most important change she would make—she'd sand the surface more
| carefully before enamelling if she
were starting over. “For a really perfect finish it would be best to take the paint off with paint remover. It you look closely you can see where I didn’t get the check marks quite ded off and they show through black,” she explained. Her kitchen is not at all dark. This is largely because Mrs. Smith uses an inborn artistic sense in her decoration. “If I'd used too much black it would look funny,” is the way she puts it. So the lower part of of the wall, about waist high, is

background reflects all the light, and small red and black figures tie it to the rest of the room. Her linoleum has a mottled black background. It doesn’t show every mark as would a plain black. Red and white lines in its formal pattern carry out the color scheme.

On doors and windows the solid black is brightened with Chinese
panels and add a touch of color. The restraint with which she used the red and the all-over design of wall

rogking chair her son Walter used to use, she also painted black with a bit of red to make a “dining set” for young Steven Smith. He has ‘always preferred his father's chair tn a seat at the big table, but now at the ripe old age of 4 ‘he’s beginning to outgrow it and thinks he’s a man already,” his grandmother said. Some ‘badly battered old chairs had broken backs removed and seats restored before they, too, were painted black.
Cupboards Are White
Her cupboards built in around the sink when they remodelled, are white. "A window over the sink, another beside the table, give plenty of light in spite of three black doors that reflect very little. Instead of a curtain at the sink window Mrs. Smith uses small three cornered glass shelves on either side to hold pots of ivy and other greenery. These shelves were made to her specifications by her next door neighbor Jack Perkins, who is a glass worker. The shelves slip into finy wooden grooves made of wooden moldings fastened in pairs onto the cupboards and window frames. She uses plain white curtains at the other window. She solves the {problem of clean shades by buying inexpensive white ones, replacing them each spring. A shelf over the radiator at the table window holds her boxes of crackers and dry cereals. “You haven't: any idea how fresh and crisp they are in winter from the radiator’s heat,” she said. Four-year-old Steven Smith . + he tries out the black furniture,

(trast with the white interior is very| effective. She uses a tall metal cabinet in one corner, painted white with black trim, for a linen closet. It also holds those odds and ends that 50 often clutter up a bathroom with inadequate storage space. A clotheshamper seat in black, white and red completes it. Linoleum, paper and woodwork are like that in the adjoining kitchen. The Smiths’ back kitchen has ‘ideas in it, too. When Mrs. Smith lamented the lack of a broom closet Mr. Smith assembled big pieces of beaverboard, and with light lumber for a framework made her one! Enamelled, it makes a good looking roomy cupboard. One side of the double compartment closet has shelves for her various cleaning materials. The other is tall enough for dust mops and brooms. “Then I had a clutter of things out here—tools, overshoes, bottles to go back to the store—with no place to put them. So we fixed up this old wooden table, and put. a porcelain top on it,” Mrs. Smith said. “I made the colored curtains to hang underneath and now I have a good place to store the things out of the way.”

But the view- across flower-flilled back yards is such that “people are always stopping in the alley to look and to ask if they can comf¥ in.” That's the way Mrs, Alma Taylor, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Qualiza at 929 describes it. “But if Mom stuck a broomstick in the ground it would probably grow,” she continued, commenting on the slips
her mother is starting from their \
fig trees. The Qualizas have ttheir- apricot tree on the south side of the garage —for protection against cold. A nice shrub of the tender evergreen rosemary thrives winter and summer in a pot so it’s ready to take indoors every autumn. Their rose tree is laid down each fall (like the figs) and covered against winter's cold so it doesn't freeze back to the graft. » A “ NEXT DOOR at 9025 another daughter, Mrs. Sylvia Porter, has an equally attractive yard. In the tiny vegetable plot Japanese caba bage, raised from seed her husband, J. E. Porter, brought from Japan, looks like the usual red cabbage but The Chinese popcorn has already formed tiny red-kerneled ears, On the other side of the Qualizas the garden of Mr. and Mrs. Valentine Simonelig is full of ideas as well as beauty. Mrs. Simonelig raises celery as most of us raise parsley. She clips the tops to use in canning, forces new growth from the roots by watering it well. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Ivancle at 937 have many fine roses. They carry out the block's characteristic (and so effective) use of tiny edging plants around every flower bed with dwarf balsam and lots of alyssum.

at 914 have blud grass as do Mr. and Mrs. James Reeves at 947. “Bent grass takes so much attention,” Mrs. Reeves said, and her time at the moment is taken up with preparations for her daughter Mitzi's approaching wedding. It seems that Mr. and Mrs, Joseph Mervar, across the street at 960 got the block started on bent grass when they tried it out some six years ago. Gradually others planted it.

But they've found the birds of the street like greens as well as the people, So they had to cover their fall lettuce with wire netting. . Mr. and Mrs. Louie Gerbick at 956 use their enclosed porch semi-green-house fashion. Mrs, Gerbick takes in pots of her fine carnations, and jthey flower now and then during the winter, “for they like it where it's cool.” She takes in a pot of marjoram, too, so she can have fresh leaves for seasoning.
