R. OPPOSED BALKAN INVASION
sio| Magazine Article by Son Elliott Reveals Father Refused
of U. S. Soldiers.
NEW YORK, Sept. 17 (U. P.) —The late President Roosevelt was quoted today as saying that he insisted on invasion of Europe from
Balkans because he could “see no
reason for putting the lives of American soldiers in jeopardy to protect
Europe.”
Mr. Roosevelt's remark was made public by his son, Elliott, in an
and where England will be. He's scared of letting the Russians get too strong. Maybe the Russians will get strong in Europe. Whether that's bad depends on a whole lot of factors. “The one thing I'm sure of is this: If the way to save American lives, the way to win as short a war as possible, is from the west and from the west alone, then that’s that. I see no reason for putting the lives of American soldiers in Jeopardy in order to protect real or fancied British interests in Europe.” Elliott said his father told him regarding the conferences that “the biggest thing was in making clear to Stalin that the United States and Great Britain were not aligned in one common bloc against the Soviet Union.” . “I think we've got rid of that idea, once and for all,” the late President was quoted. “I hope so. The. one thing that could upset the applecart, after the war, is if the world , is divided again, Russia against England and us.” Bitter Differences
Mr. Roosevelt reported bitter differences between Stalin and Churchill and quoted his father as saying, “I'll have my work cut out for me, in between those two. They're so different.” The late President nodded an emphatic affirmative when. his son asked him if he liked Stalin. “I'm sure we'll hit it off, Stalin and I” Mr. Roosevelt was quoted. The article disclosed that
f | Churchill violently opposed ap-
pointment of Gen. George C. Marshall to head the European invasion, which subsequently was led by Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower. “If there's one American general Winston can't abide, it’s Gen. Marshall,” the late president was quoted. “And, needless to say, it’s because Gen. Marshall is right (on a western irivasion). I hope, some-
yi day, everybody in America will re-
alize what a debt they owe to George Marshall.” The article said that at the Cairo conference Mr. Roosevelt met with Generalissimo and Madame Chiang Kai Shek and agreed to support | their contention that no foreign {nations be allowed special empire rights in China provided Chiang would “form a unity government with the Communists in Yenan while the war was being fought.” Chiang reportedly agreed to this, provided he had U. S, assurance | that Russia would respect the Man{churian frontier, President Roose- | velt later told Stalin of these prom|ises and the Soviet leader replied | that as world recognition of Soviet | soverignty was a cardinal principle | With him, he in return would respect. the sovereignty of other | countries, large or small.
VANISHING PRIMITIVE | INDIAN TYPE STUDIED
By Science Service
WASHINGTON, Sept 17.—Vanishing remnants of the primitive Indian tribes that inhabit South |America's southernmost island, | Tierra Del Fuego, have been studied {by a sicentific mission sent out by | the Chilean government. A prelimi{nary communication of their results {has been sent to the editor of Sci(ence, published here, by Dr. Alej{andro Lipschutz, ‘chief of the mission. There are only a few score indi-
| viduals left in each of the three|l
tribes in the region, and the mission was able to make body measurements of a considerable proportion {of them. Blood types were also de- | termined. All pure-blooded individ- | uals examined were of type O, | which is the type of American In- | tins in general. There has been some intermingling of European ancestry, and persons of this mixed stock in some instances had blood of types A, B and AB.
