Hopes to Cut Consumer Bills by $8,700,000.

City council will meet soon to map strategy in its campaign to reduce the utility bills of Indianapolis citizens by at least $8,700,000 a year. That figure was set as the gross annual “overcharge” in a memorandum report to the council presented last night by its finance committee. The report was made by Herman Bowers, finance committee chairman, who said investigations to date showed roughly the following possible savings which could be made by cutting rates: On rates charged by Indianapolis Railways, Inc, about $3,000,000. Indianapolis Power & Light Co, $3,000,000. Citizens $1,300,000. Indiana Bell Telephone Co. $1,000,000. Indianapolis Water Co., $400,000. “Only the Beginning” Last night's report, Mr. Bowers said, was “only the beginning.” Assured of Mayor Tyndall's full support in the rate-reducing drive, the finance committee will probe still deeper into the financial status of the local utilities for dollar-by-dol-lar details on how and where the rates can be pared. 3 “We feel a two-fold responsibility in the rate question,” Mr. wers said. “First, it is our job to that the city itself gete the best service for the lowest possible rate and that it receives the highest possible retiirn in payments from the utilities. Second, we must assure each citizen the best possible utility service at the lowest possible rate.” City Dissatisfied

The city, he pointed out, is not|satisfied with the amount paid into the treasury by the gas utility in lieu of taxes. Indianapolis Railways, too, pose In the days when most of the transit system was rail-borne, the transit companies of the past maintained their own. right-of-ways, Currently, however, most of the transit vehicles are heavy busses and trolleys operated on the streets which the city maintains without additional help. “If Indianapolis Railways would pay a fair share of maintaining these streets as it would have to do for tracks, the result would be a heavy saving ow>the city tax rate,” Mr. Bowers said. On other utility fronts, the report charged, Indianapolis Power & Light 1s realizing a disproportionate return on its common stock investment while the electric bill of the average local resident is the highest in nine north central states; the gas company sells certain byproducts below top possible return whereas a higher price would accrue to the benefit of the ratepayer.

HUNTS A MAYOR

NEW ALBANY, Ind, Sept. 17 (U, P.).—Nobody wants to be mayor of New Albany.

The city council can't find anyone to serve the remaining 15 months of the term of Mayor Raymond L. Jaegers, who shot -nd killed himself in his city hall office Sept. 5. Councilmin E. K. Scott has been mayor pro tem, while the council studied a permanent successor to Jaegers. C. Robert Brooks, a former mayor, was nominated by the council to take the position. He declined last night, saying private business prevented his acceptance. Speaking on behalf of the council,, Scott said the city fathers sought “the right kind of a man because of the critical situation of the city.” “We are taking great care in our selection,” Scott said.

BURGLARS BREAK IN | BUT GAIN NOTHING

Burglars who jimmied a door to] a plumbing shop and chiseled a hole into an adjoining drug store last night got nothing for their work, police reported. Chris Griener of the Griener Plumbing Co. 4322 E. 10th st., said nothing was missing from the shop. J. H. Large, proprietor of the Large Drug Store, 4324 E. 10th st.,, into which the burglars burrowed through an adjoining wall, said “not even a package of cigarets or quart of liquor was missing.” Burglars who entered the Edwards
