PATTERSON 1S FREED. OF DEATH SENTENC

Governor Gates today commuted to life imprisonment the death sentence of Thomas Patterson, con- ~ victed Feb. 7 in Marion county criminal court for the fatal shooting of Albert Dance in a local tavern June 20, 1945. The commutation was granted after the governor received a letter from Trial Judge William D. Bain outlining exteffuating circumstances and recommending such | action. Patterson's execution date was scheduled for June 10. A reprieve was granted 10 days before that date for further investigation. In obtaining the commutation Patterson agreed in a signed statement that he will not try to obtain a release from prison at any future

(U. P.).—Emil Bildilli, former pitcher for the St. Louis Browns of the American league, died today in Blackford county hospital of injuries received in a traffic accident

y. Bildilli, who quit big-time baseball to become a fireman, was given slight chance for recovery from the time he entered the hospital. Alone in his automobile as he drove to his Muncie, Ind. home|} from Pt. Wayne, Bildilli sustained a skull fracture when the car struck two trees along a highway. Inves- . tigators believed ‘he fell asleep at the wheel. Bildilli pitched a game with the General Electric baseball team in Pt. Wayne Saturday night and was on his way home when the accident occurred. He pitched for the Pt. Wayne team the last three seasons.
