ATOMIC ENERGY

Warns World to Act or Be “Slaves of Fear.’

ATLANTIC CITY, N. J., Sept. 10 (U. P.).—The pegples of the world will be slaves of fear unless efféctive international controls are placed on atomic energy, Maj. Gen. | Leslie R. Groves, head of the Man- | hattan project warned yesterday. | “We must control the uses of | atomic energy in war by enforce- | able international measures or we face the prospect of living in constant fear of the horribly devastating atomic war,” he told the 60th annual convention of the Printing Industry of America, Inc. 10.—When anyone mentions an alligator in South America, everybody immediately thinks of Barranquilla. This area has no more alligators than many other places. Nevertheless, it is the alligator capital of Latin America—all on account of a remarkable song hit. The song is called “El HombreCaiman™ or “The Alligator-Man.” A refrain is repeated many times saying that “the alligator is leaving for Barranquilla.” It is a headline in Buenos Aires, Havana, Rio de Janeiro, Mexico City, Santiago, Lima, Valparaiso and, of course, here in Barranquilla, the purported destination of the alligator. Inspired in Legend Jose Maria Penaranda, composer of the hit, runs an orchestra here called “Penaranda and His Boys.” They made the song famous, Penaranda told me the other day about the aligator-man and how he came to write the song. His story: Up the tropical Magdalena river, 80 miles from sweating Barranquilla, is the village of Plato. In this town, there is an old legend which was told to Penaranda by the natives. A young man named Saul Aguilar, says the legend, was stricken with

down the river to Barranquilla, The refrain repeats: “The alligator goes. The alligator goes to Barranquilla.” One of the verses runs: “Yesterday when I went for a swim early In the morning, I saw a very strange alligator with a face almost human.” Another: “What this alligator eats is worthy of admiration. He eats bread and he eats cheese and he drinks lots of rum.” Spreads Over Latin America

Mrs. Penaranda and his boys played it at Barranquilla during carnival and it was a great hit. It spread all over Latin America. The music is of the poor type, which means that the rhythm is thumped. out on a medium-sized drum about 13 inches in diameter and about 24 inches in depth. The word “caiman,” which means alligator, has taken on a number of new meanings. An unusually sharp business man is called a “caiman” in Columbia. In Argentina, a young man who likes to go out with lots of girls also is called an alligator. Alligators have become sO popular in Barranquilla that a variety have been manufactured. Most popular is one with the head of a man.

But then she dropped the bottle info the river and Saul was doomed. In despair, he started swimming
