SEEK AMNESTY
Draft Violators’ Paroles
Have Increased.
By FRED MULLEN - United Press Staff Correspondent
WASHINGTON, Sept. 9—General amnesty for conscientious objectors imprisoned for draft violations is unlikely in view of the justice department’s liberalized parole policies, it: was learned today. Attorney Gen. Tom C. Clark, aft-
in early July, said he would: discuss
bers before making a recommenda- | tion to President Truman. * However, responsible officials said amnesty at the present time was not necessary because of the libéralized policies which have resulted in increased number of paroles: ¢ As of today, only 153 persons who claim to be conscientious - objectors | remain in prison, as against 819 on| March 7. In addition, only 1046 | | Jehovah's Witnesses — they ‘refuse | classification as conscientious oy | jectors—remain in prison as agai | 2002 on March 7. Policy Speeds Releases
Besides these two groups, there
and other violators. | The present policy, which is said to have speeded the releases, permits paroles on these bases: 1. Fathers and those over 29, the present top draft age. | 2. Those of draft age and without children who agree to do some type of “national service” work,! such as working in hospitals. 3. Those who qualify for parole under general parole policies set | for all prisoners. It is in this category that deserving Jehovah's Witnesses fall. There have been approximately 16,000 convictions since the draft law was enacted Oct. 16, 1940.
