Lew Parker Outstanding In 'Front Page’
Kicks Lid OFf 1946-47 N. Y. Musical Season
By JACK GAVER United Press Staff Correspondent NEW YORK, Sept. T—A former chorus boy and comic of the musical shows kicked the lid off the [1046-47 theatrical season this week ‘in his dramatic debut with a fine performance as the profane, lovebitten reporter Hildy Johnson in a revival of-that famous 18-year-old newspaper play, "“The Front | Page. "e + The musicals aren't likely to see Lew Parker again. This isn’t one. of those flash successes. ‘Although still a young man, Lew has been around a long ‘time. He's come the hard way, but
the sure way.. Many an experi-
enced dramatic actor would be’ better if he had gone through the vaudeville-musical grind - as Mr; ‘Parker did for years. The immediate rewards may be small, but the training is invaluable. Mr. Parker had a couple of strikes on him. Many in the first night audience remembered the fine work which Lee Tracy did as Hildy in the original production bs:® in August, 1928. Tough to Buck Memories of good acting are
tough things to buck.
| Parker_ did it successfully.
| The play, by Charles MacArthur
— land Ben Hecht, also came through
in good shape. It is still biff-bang drama, loaded with laugh lines and | situations that haven't staled.

If the Fred Waring program at Butler field house Sept. 28 draws the anticipated erowd,” “the fleld house may get a series of top-flight,
That's the opinion of Lawrence Hill, Meridian bdok shop and ticket office proprietor, back today from conferences with Chicago promoters and booking agents. “Chicago agents are watching the Waring venture with great interest,” Mr. Hill said, “With a seating capacity of 18,000, the field house is one of the largest auditoriums in the country, and the Chicago people have been considering its availability for some time,” he added. : Excellent Prospect “It takes a huge auditorium te accommodate the crowds who want to hear an artist like Marian Anderson. And it takes space to put on the kind of sensational circus Olsen and Johnson are now said
to be planning” Mr. Hill com-[

By VIRGINIA M'PHERSON United Press Hollywood. Correspondent HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 7—Its a good thing Dinah Shore didn't pick this morning to visit Husband George Montgomery at the studio. Today was the big fight scene, And the way they beat up on the husky he-man was something "no wife should have to watch. Mr. Montgomery was on the receiving end of flying fists, rubber hoses, saps, and heavy boots, Three stunt men were on hand to rough up-- his 6 foot 2, 200-pound frame. No ‘holds barred, And they really earned their dough. The scene reminded us a little of the goings-on at some of the wilder parties around town. Except that no movie queens were mixed up in this. Also a camera was on hand to record the super, A-1 brawl for 20th Century-Fox's “The Brasher Doubloon.” + : Socked Three Times And, as Hollywood brawls go, this one. was a dilly. Mr. Montgomery got socked on the jaw three times, hit on the neck twice with a rubber hose, kicked in the stomach once, and sapped six times. When the three thugs got through with him they banged his head on the floor a few times—just for good measure. It was enough to sehd any ordi-
