TRUMAN BACK FROM VACATION

Talks With Byrnes in Paris By Telephone. :

WASHINGTON, Sept.’3 10. P). —President Truman, back at. his = desk after an 18-day vacation cruise, soheduled a conference today with Acting Secretary of State William L, Clayton who presumably will bring the President up to date on international developments. White House Press ~Secrefary

Truman spoke by trans-Atlantie telephone this morning witJr Secretary of State James F. Byrnes, wha was believed to have given the President a report on the. Paris peace conference. Mr. Clayton was the only caller on today's White House appointment list, as Mr. Truman: began catching up on the work that piled up during his absence. , Work Piled Up Politics, appointments. and a host of other problems also clamored for Mr. Truman's attention. Mtr. Truman, looking fit and rested, stepped off the presidential yacht, Williamsburg, late yesterday with the pronbuncement that he was ready for the work that piled up during his absence. There was considerable speculation in the: capital as. to how. ace tive a role Mr. Truman would~de= cide to play in the forthcoming election campaigns, in which Democratic contrd] of the house is at stake. \ May Take Stump The President has indicated. he might do some active stumping on behalf of the party: This may have been the subjéct of discussion when Democratic - National Chairman Robert Hannegan joined ' Mr. Truman aboard the Williamsbarg for the last leg of his cruise. Sia The President presumably will concentrate-any personal campaigning in states where . Republican

to Democratic ‘incumbents in the house. . Such contests would thus provide a test of the President's own popularity. Meanwhile, Mr. Truman is expected to announce soon his appointments ° to the commission which will control domestic develop- { ment of atomic energy. H® de- | voted considerable study to this all- | important task even during his vacation, Wages and Prices Studied The. presence of Reconversion Director John R. Steelman aboard the presidential yacht on the last day of the cruise suggested ‘that wageprice problems also received elose | study. Recent rises in the cost of -living have wiped out much of the pay raises won by labor during the last year. The administration. is trying “to‘cling to its present wage stabiliza- | tion program but may be forced to retreat in the face of unioh demands | for. a new round of raises. Mr. Truman may also have to | réferee-a dispute over restoration of {price controls on dairy products. The price control board has .re fused to reimpose ceilings on such things as milk and butter despite repeated demands from OPA.
