YOUR HELPFUL NEIGHBOR! Adding a Couple of Bookcases Will Help Make '‘Unsightly Hole' Decorative Part of Home
Below are more letters sent to
to share what they have done to improve their homes with other Times
readers. WIDE DOORWAY . . . a couple of bookcases and an “unsightly hole” becomes a decorative part of this man’s home:
o n ” «I did away with a bad eyesore, quite inexpensively, too, which 3 would like to pass on to other people who might have the same nuisance I had. “My home was built a number of
years ago and it had the customa Rd
wide open doorway from-the di room to the living room. I afcided a combination bookcase and doodad case would make more use of the doorway and dress up my home.
” . “MY CHANCE to get lumber came recently when one of the lumber yards received a shipment of three-quarter inch white pine fin- | ished shelving. I might add it is| mighty scarce. «I made two separate bookshelves with a little cabinet having hinged doors at the base. I put the 16-inch cases on each side of the doorway flush with the wall opening. There are five shelves in each case and the cabinet for odds and ends that accumulate around the house. My wife put the inevitable ornamental junk on the top shelf. “From three - quarter plywood, which is available in Indianapolis, I
made a valance which joined the two bookcases making them a solid An edging around the valance flush with the ceiling finished the

where a good-sized easy chair, lamp, table and lamp have a nice spot.”
n " » SQUEAKY FLOORS . . . “The man with the squeaky floors who fixed them with cleats and screws (last week's building page) certainly went to a lot of trouble. When I read about all he did to get rid of squeaky floors I felt sorry for him. “I just want to tell him that he could have taken care of squeaks by drbpping a little penetrating oil in the exact spot of the squeak between the floorboards. This is very successful and a lot easier.”
The Times will welcome letters which it can publish showing how Indianapolis homemakers are improving and brightening up their homes.
