UR REMARKS in our last story about the elevations of certain sections of the city provoked some questions. The highest point in the state? Aeccording to the 1946 State Historical Almanac, that point is in Randolph County (where White River, part of our city water supply, arises) near the Ohio State line: 1,285 feet above sea level. The lowest? Close to the Ohio River in Vanderburgh County 313 feet.

THAT PHRASE, heard so oft. en these vacationing days, “Let's go up to Lake Michigan,” is really a misnomer, Lake Michigan has an elevation of 581 feet, whereas the street level of Monument Circle is 716 feet above
Some Topography and History
the City, October 2, 1865: “Crown Hill, north of the city, is the most eligible location for the reservoir.” The idea was to build a dam across White River, a mile or so away, install some steam machinery to lift the water to the reservoir, from whence it would flow by gravity down to the city.

SUCH was the recommendation of Mayor John Caven, approved by the Council, but nothing happened. The next year (1866) another plan was pro-posed-—to take water from White River above the city. A company was actually organized, some pipe was laid in North Street to fill franchise requirements, but this company failed.
