ARIEL Mandarin Cap | ; CELE
HERE'S a new angle to hats for fall. At last the minute numbers that did balancing acts on their wearers’ eyebrows have bowed out. No matter what their silhouets, most fall hats have deep crowns, shaped and draped to fit, really fit, the noggin. Even the more or less shallow sailor has dropped anchor toward the back of the cranium and lifts its prow well above the forehead.
This shows up in a multitude of silhouets, several shown here: Hattie Carnegie's “capulette” (in fabric, feathers, felt or crochet) — Laddie Northridge's back-on-the-head felt turban—Jeanne Tete's offface felt mandarin. cap—Florence Reichman's beehive~Sally Victor's backward slanting drum bonnet. None just “perches.”
Neither does Mme. Reine's ostrich-trimmed sailor—or Lilly Dache's sweeping brimmed felt cloche. Even “dress up” styles are “downward” —see Mme. Reine's fluted turban of pure silk brocade. Sally Victor wraps up the whole idea in her “cozycap” of white angora jersey, gold embroidered. —By LOUISE FLETCHER
