» ». ¥ UNSIGHTLY WOODWORK... one reader discovered good wood under old finish and improved the appearance of his home “100 per cent” Here is his letter: . # » “1 was overjoyed a couple months ago when I could move my family into a five-room cottage. Anything ed at the time. MOK poet, settled down, placed our furniture and decorated the place as well as we could, my wife began to grumble about "how “awful” the rooms looked. Even washed the doors and. baseboards were & dirty sort of a color. Whoever occupied the place before us certainly ruined a Iot of good wood-~ work. 4 : . . r «1 PEELED some paint off one of the doors and found they were

made of good hardwood stock. Evidently made before the wood shortage.

“My wife was convinced that we should refinish all the doors and woodwork. “I applied a good paint remover to the finish with a brush, I let the remover soften the paint and then I scraped it off. I did the doors in sections. ~ - » THE PARTICLES and bits that were left over I removed with steel wool. The varnished surfaces underneath had to be treated in a similar fashion. It was hard work but after a good sanding with a fine sandpaper I had some good Joking woodwork. sh “The major portion of the sanding was done by my wife during the day. She deserves a lot of credit because it is hard work but very necessary to the final job. . - . “WE WORKED about a month, evenings and off days. Several cracks-were filled and stained. The bedroom doors we bleached with a solution of oxalic acid. Then we washed the surface thoroughly and applied a clear coat of varnish followed by wax. We had beautiful doors. “The living and dining room doors we stained with a light stain and applied a clear varnish. 3 J ” ” “THE KITCHEN woodwork was repainted with a light coat of

I lived in the place so ng that I never noticed it. Neither did my wife—at least she didn't say anything until we visited some friends of ours. “While we played cards their kids kept running around the living room on the squeaky floors until they drove me to distraction. When we got home I mentioned the fact to my wife who immediately jumped me about my own floors. In fact, we got into an argument about fit. . w ~ I AGREED to fix the squeaks, I surprised even myself how easily such a thing can be done to make a home a lot more pleasant. “The squeak ran the entire length of two rooms where we do most of our walking—the front room through the dining rodm to the kitchen. After a lot of investigation, walking, and listening I found out it was the subfloor. The top floor which is of good hardwood stock and tight had no squeaks. ef. “I TOOK and made somé hardwood cleats from an oak board I had in the basement. The cleats | were about an inch square, I {screwed the cleat into the joist flush up against the subfloor. “Then I took some three-inch screws and drilled through the cleat for the screw. The screw went through the cleat, the subfloor and about halfway through the hardwood top floor. This pulled the squeaky subfloor tight with the hardwood floor above and the cleat below.” ~ » ” The Times will welcome letters which it can publish showing how Indianapolis homemakers are improving and brightening up their homes. :

location. vy But, although originally scheduled to be completed July 18, the reassembling has been beset by labor and material shortages, A. H. Merriam Graves, builder, explained. First Plaster Coat Applied “There are tog many building jobs for the number of workmen available,” Mr. Graves added. “It‘'used to take about 90 days to build a house; now it takes eight or nine months.” Almost three months have been consumed already in reassembling

the model house, which had been |H

virtually completed once.

The inside remains to be finished,

although the first plaster coat has been applied, Mr. Graves declared.

Designed for Veteran

At the start, inability to’ get plasterers was a barrier. Brick layers also were scarce, Wiring materials couldn't be obtained for a time; neither could asbestos shingles or rock lath. Mr. Graves still is wondering how long it will be before a veteran and his family will be able to’ move into the house,
