Layishly Used, Perfume Just ‘Scares’ Men
But in Small Amounts It Subdues Them
By CLAIRE COX United Presa Staff Correspondent CHICAGO, Aug. 31.—When a man laughs at a woman's perfume he isn't trying to be funny, a perfumed perfume expert said today.| He's really scared to death. ‘Rita Terrell, slim New Yorker, told delegates to the Associated Tolletries convention that overanxious women were likely to overwhelm men with over-dosages of exotic perfumes—but they'd never conquer them that way, Too much eau de cologne, she warned, gives men the jitters. They may laugh but it doesn’t mean a thing. “They are indulging in nervous humor which betrays their uncertainty as the quarry,” Miss Terrell said, Subduing the Male
Used in the right amounts, however, perfume will do more to subdue a man than all the apple pies like mother used to make, she said. A few drops of attar of roses will tame other animals, too, she added. There is a scent to trap every animal, “You can throw lions and tigers into a fayous haze with perfume,” she said. “And you can snare bears with a mixture of musk and oil of rhodium, “Even the wildest bird is reduced to submission by rubbing dil of bergamot on its beak.”
Treat Them Subtly But men must be treated with more subtlety, she said. : “Don't think you can just throw perfume on yourself,” she warned. “Be delusive. One of the most delusive ways to use perfume is to soak a little piece of flannel in| your favorite scent and tuck it into the upper seam of your stocking. Or spray the drapes in your living room like Marie Antoninette did. Or to be confusingly scented, take. your atomizer, spray a mist of perfume and walk through it.”
Greek ‘Know How’
Circe kept Ulysses overtime by smart use of perfume, Miss Terrell said. Heady fragrances caused so much romantic turmoil in Greece, she said, that perfumes were outlawed and had to be bootlegged. “Those Grecians knew how to use perfume,” she said. “And so did the the British.” In 1774 the British parliament decreed against unfair females who trapped innocent men. : The law read: “All women of whatever age, ‘rank, profession or degree, Yin maids or widows, that shall fr and after this act seduce and betray into matrimony any of His Majesty's subjeéts by the use of scents, paints, cosmetics, perfumed washes or bolstered hips, shall incur.
