JONESBORO, Ind. Aug. 17 (U: P.).—~Civil War Veteran John C. Adams interrupted his vegetable gardening today for a quiet family observance of his 99th birthday anniversary. Mr. Adams, who is Indiana department commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, is in “excellent health,” A drummer boy and a colonel’s aide in the Civil war, he plans to go to Indianapolis Aug. 256 to attend the 80th encampment of the G, A. R. He is quartermaster general of the national group. Born in Romney, Va., he joined the Union army when he was 17. He retired when he was 75. Mr, Adams makes his home with one of his three cchildren, Mrs. Maude Stranahan. Most of his eight grandchildren and six great-grandchil-dren were present for the celebration
A long-time employee of the U.& Glass Co., he spends most of his time raising potatoes and tomatoes now. He also visits with one of the other four remaining Hoosier Civil war veterans, 103-year-old John Smith of Marion. Mr. Adams’ wife died in 1939.
